The retro kit really is just two valves to replace the R12 fittings with 134A fittings and some 134A, so yeah replace any parts then seal it up and pull a vacuum on the system, then fill with 134A.

Are you going to charge the system yourself? Do you have a manifold and gauges? Does your system have a charge in it now?
Without the gauges, first check and see if the system is charged. Remove the cap from the low pressure fill valve and push in the stem, it's just like a tire. If you hear any gas coming out, you cannot legally work on it. You need to go to your serviceman and have the R-12 removed. Per the law, you can't release freon into the atmosphere, it must be recovered by a licensed technician. After the charge is gone, you can replace the dryer and the valve. You can also remove the Schrader valves from the fittings and put on the R-134a adapters. Recommended practice is to then pull a vacuum for a leak check. If it holds the vacuum, then the charge of R-134a and oil can be added.You need a set of gauges to check the vacuum and charge the system. If you don't have the right tools, let your serviceman do that part. As for cleaning out all of the oil, you don't have to. The older oil is heavier and lays on the bottom and doesn't hurt anything. R-12 and R-134a can also be mixed, I know of some farmers who started doing it in tractors over 10 years ago.

so I found a shop that will evac my r12 for free and I can charge it myself... I'm freakin excited here soon shell be just how I want her
