Re: The man is after me again.
Around here idiots put bumble bee exhaust enhancers on their Hondas and it is insanly loud, no one does a thing. He is just jacking with you but unfortunately since he is the law (regardless of the REAL laws in your area) he can harass you over and over, best to just stay on track and make it quieter.
Since cost is a factor see if you can go to a low rent exhaust shop in a poor part of town, and see if you can get on good speaking terms with one of the exhaust guys. ALOT of times people will come in to pull off perfectly good mufflers to put on flowmasters or whatever and they have em stacked up in the back. I have gotten many a paid of them for free by just asking... could save you $100...

Re: The man is after me again.
Just run open headers and when Johnny Law pulls you over again look at him and say, "Now that's loud!"

Re: The man is after me again.
I ran straight pipes on my '76 Jimmy for quite a while.
I didn't have any problems with John Law, but the neighbors in the trailer park complained about me starting up in the wee hours of the morning for work. I'd hit the throttle once to set the choke & then hit the starter; as soon as I had oil pressure I'd put in "D" & idle out of the park, but they were still unhappy. So I put mufflers on it. I also had a '72 Vega that I put a 307 in. I didn't have any money left over for exhaust work, so I borrowed a set of Lo-Baks" off a buddy's race car. Ran them for months until the next race season started & I had to return 'em. Never had a problem with the officers of the law there either. All in all, I was just VERY, VERY careful about where I was & who was around when I rolled into the "loud" pedal. Yup. I are a redneck.

Re: The man is after me again.
You can leave the 'packs on in front of the turbos, this should make it even quieter.

Re: The man is after me again.
Sounds like you have bigger issues than loud exhaust if you're losing your license for a month.

Re: The man is after me again.
I had to put some Monza brand resonator tips on an El Camino I used to have. I had replaced the mufflers on it, with baby turbo's and they sounded good, but loud. The tips quietened it down to an acceptable level. V6 is what was in it, and it was throaty.
So, 26-inch Cherry Bombs are too loud for the gendarmes? I hate to hear that, because that was going to be my next exhaust system. What about installing an X-pipe? That will balance out the exhaust pulses and is supposed to enable both mufflers to take the flow and effectively use twice as much muffler than currently used.

Re: The man is after me again.
sjarret - My liscense issue is a mistake on my part. I dealt with the monetary consequences of it, and am now going to deal with losing my liscense for a month. It's in the past, and what's done is done. I've beat myself up over it enough, and I've moved on.
and to satisfy wondering minds, lol, the reason I'm losing my liscense is I received an underage consumption of alcohol over the summer. Like I said, I made a mistake. However, I've since then dealt with all the consequences aside from losing my liscense for a month, so that's the next thing on the horizon. I've also turned 21, so, it's done and over with. Thanks for all the reccomendations guys. As soon as I can get some coinage, I'll get ready to fix it. In the mean time, looking into local laws and finding out if I'm truley over the dB limit will cost me nothing, not to mention give me something to do. Also in the mean time, since I'm legally not supposed to operate the truck while it has "illegal exhaust", I'll probably be ramming some steel wool down the pipes, just in an effort to temporarily keep the law off my back when I go to school next week. Ah well, live and learn I guess. Just another iron in the fire... Thanks again all, I really appreciate your responses and thoughts. -Sam.

Re: The man is after me again.
Haha my Grandpa told me stories about how he used to do that in the 40's-50's!! Hey had straight pipes on his flathead six hot rod, and he would get pulled over and told to take it to the judge. He would put steel wool on a string down the pipes, rev it up for the judge, a get halfway down the block and pull the steel wool back out!! You should try it and tell us how it works =D

Re: The man is after me again.
SC is the same as NC, no insp. Here the cops just basically do what they want when they want. I have a Busa with a Muzzy full race 4 into 1, I get pulled frequently, as soon as I take off the helmet and they see an old guy, all is ok. They are only looking for the quick money making tickets against the kids. The Harley crowd ride around with strait pipes and never get looked at. Let a young person with the radio too loud come by and its cha ching time for the city. A gun, a badge and a license to steal...

Re: The man is after me again.
Here's my idea:
-Find 2 old soup cans that will slip freely into your pipes far enough that they can't be seen -Drill the bottoms of them full of holes -Fill with steel wool -Slide them up your pipes and run a self tapping screw into them to hold'em in place Get your ticket cleared, go home & remove them... and chuck them behind the seat to use again the next time you get a ticket

Re: The man is after me again.
Smoked... no one knows everything. Even the highest court of the land has to refer to other cases and books before saying the final word on a case, every president has advisors to tell him what to do. Even that old man who was your shop teacher.... none of them knew everything.
This officer made a judgement call. He had no testing equipment. There was no scientific way for him to be sure. This is one reason he issued a fix it ticket. Some towns do in fact write tickets to pay the mayor's sallery. This iss fact. But, it is far and few between. Your comments will/are p!ssing off the law enforcement MEMBERS here, and also, to an extent, are out of line since you know nothing about the town the original poster lives in, nor the police department that protects that comunity. Lets get this thread back on track, on low buck ways to rectify the issue, and not go off personal experiances/opinions on law enforcement officials. |

Re: The man is after me again.
Do you have a yearly inspection like Virginia does? Was it a state trooper that told you this? If you have a yearly inspection and it was a county cop or sheriff, then take it to an inspection station and have it checked over and ask the State police what a legal exhaust system is.
