Oil Filter?

I too have, for the most part, always used Fram & never have had any problems.

Curious....If Fram is all that bad and getting that kind of publicity, (whether true or not), then why hasn't Fram come out & say anything about this, or correct the problems?

Also, I never heard of "WIX" filters Maybe it's not in my area.

I have always used fram and valvoline, and never had any problems. I've torn down motors that have always had purolator and mobil, and another that uses k&n and Qstate. both of those engines had a large amount of sludge in them. Whether the oil and filter did it or the drivers habits, I don't know. I think this is like the old Ford vs Chevy argument. You can always find people on both sides of any argument. Bottom line is all oils lubricate, and all filters well...filter. Do some research and use what you feel is best, or use what your dad always used like I do. sorry so wordy, just my.02. happy hunting!

Is it though? I mean, you can look and find articles written and pictures of all these filter's guts. Chevy v. Ford... consumer reports will actually tell you which models are holding up or costing more...

just like people have openned up these filters and found cheap materials and poor craftsmanship...

good info. i guess i have never really thought about it that much. i have always grabbed fram if it was available. i might be passing it up now for what i previously thought was an inferior filter.

I don't use FRAM anymore because of what I have read from everybody. I now use the WalMart brand, anybody know who makes those??

I just bought a Mobil 1 filter yesterday. For the first time my 71 hasn't gotten a A/C Delco on it. I have ran AC Delco's on everything I own. They are harder and harder to find around here. I alway's used the bigger PF 35 filter which now is a PF 1218 I think. It's half the size of the older 35 and I just felt for the money the bigger Mobile 1 was a better choice. I hope it was, time will tell.

Fram makes a filter for racing engines. Thats what several of us around here run. Also Advance Auto Parts filters are made by fram.

The regular consumer grade Frams are crap, bar none.

The HP series are fine, but they do not have the fine particle filtration for constant street use. They are built for high pressure/high flow.

I still recommend WIX or Baldwins.

i have a fram HP on my 350 it has the relief valve plugged, i will look into the K&N, Wix, i have a 2002 dodge w/Cummins when i went to change oil the first time i talked to Cummins they said the Mopar filter was made by Wix, they said Fram was not approved, i have used the Fleetguard from Cummins they have 3 grades of filter for the Cummins 5.9

WIX is excellent. Read the reviews. There are other good ones out there that are good too, but I certainly wont put a fram or similar cheapie filter on anything I drive. I changed the oil on the three cars in my driveway last weekend & they all recieved a WIX. Here in Canada, it's tougher to get a quality oil filter. There's fewer independent parts places up here & you tend to end up at Canadian Tire where all you get is a house-brand Fram...

Yeah I I've seen it. Some guy in his garage opening up oil filters and there is another one by some student at an engineering school. Both totally un-scientific.

And yet they seem to be good enough to protect multi-million dollar vintage Ferrari's....hmmmm, curious.

Saw it already. An internet posting. I could do the same thing here only pro-Fram if I wanted. Not scientific. You guys can't tell me there isn't a single Consumer Reports article about oil filters that shows data on Fram filters?

In actuality there are very few differences in the actual designs and materials in oil filters. The most important thing is that you change your oil and filter regularly and frequently to remove contaminants from the engine. There are thousands upon thousands of Fram oil filters sold in outlets like Wal-Mart and Advanced Auto and if they were as bad as some people say;

A. I don't think these retailer would carry them and

B. There would be engine failures and lawsuits left and right but that just is not the case.

I have pretty much always used Frams, I've been driving for 20 years. I have never had a complaint. A few times I have had a filter that was hard to get off, but I got that on the few times I used other brands too.

These days, I use the Frams with the grip substance on them, hand tighten with one hand, then use 2 hands to tighten some more and leave it at that. I usually have no problems getting them off. I aways put some new oil on the seal before I put them on.

Anyway, no complaints with Fram from me.
