Re: If General Motors goes away.

My take/opinion on it is that even if GM and/or Chrysler goes under, this means the other companies like Ford, Toyota and the rest will have to pick up the slack on vehicle sales, which means they will need more employees and pick up the out of work auto workers...

Re: If General Motors goes away.

So again - we that turn our own wrenches won’t see much of an effect if GM goes on the auction block to Toyota, or some Chinese car company?

The regular replacement part market will go on as before, or do even better, as folks hang on to their vehicles longer.

Honestly, for what we pay for our used trucks initially and what it takes to make them road worthy - it’s really hard to beat the daily driver economics, and, of course - not having a monthly payment hanging over your head is always nice too.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

^The simple truth^
I read all these negative comments against GM and only see hear-say,no facts.Don`t people realize that by letting myths guide thier judgment is hurting GM more than any poor management. It`s like a traffic jam caused more by the rubber neckers than the vehicle with a flat tire.

This is what General Motors management has brought to the American public in the last 15 years:

When you produce 'White Whales' as the basis for your product line your per share stock value goes for the same price as a gallon of gasoline.

Refuse to listen to what the public wants - this is what you get.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

Listening to what the public wanted is what helped get GM in this mess in the first place. We, the general public, WANTED Silverados, Tahoes, Suburbans, and in HIGH numbers! Trucks and SUV's were SO popular Ford actually kicked around the idea of nixing cars all together (not making that up, you can research it yourself.) So what happens when gas goes up? The PUBLIC turns their back on GM and unloads their trucks and suv's for foreign ****boxes. Yes, it was GM's fault for not making a quality car for Americans to turn to, but there was no need for it. The new Malibu is proof that GM can kick out a great car when they need to. The new Cruze and Camaro should be big hits as well. Even the almighty Toyota spent billions on their new Tundra and it's SUV twin, the Sequioa, and how has Toyota's 200K/yr plan worked for them? The tundra is on track to sell 70-80K units this year. The foreigners had specialized in cars for many years, it's what they knew how to do well, just as the american brands were doing very well with their full size trucks and SUVs. The foreign brands were "lucky" they got into the full size truck and SUV game late or they could have been in just as much trouble....

And if you're going to knock new GM vehicles, at least have some real world experience with them. Stripped down rental cars that get beat to hell (we all do this) shouldn't count as a "I drove an impala rental car and it was a POS." Also the "My brothers friends sister in law had a new Chevy and it was a POS" is sketchy too. Also, I owned a GM car in the 80's and it sucked and I'll never buy another again is kinda dumb too... that was over 20 years ago. Some of the reason's people won't give American cars a chance are really stupid IMO. I owned 3 '86 Toyota trucks and said I'd never own another POS Toyota again and I now have two of them

Re: If General Motors goes away.

My biggest concern right now is Hummer currently looking to be bought by a chinese company.(Ed. section this months Minitruckin and yes I subscribe) Our military technology being made available to a nation that I suspect we will wage a fight with sooner or later. I could care less if the Chinese wanna knock off the H2/H3 but access to military tech still in the field scares the heck outta me.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

There is no military tech in the H2/H3 vehicles. They are "hummer bodies" on a modified GMT 800 Chassis and the H3 is on whatever the Colorado chassis is. No "military tech" to worry about at all. ZERO.

What we should all worry about is this opening the door for Chinese manufacturers to start selling in this country...

The 'Father of GM10' is the primary reason the corporation is where it's at today, IMO.

OK maybe I was unclear. AM General ( designer of the military Humvee) is partnering with a Chinese company and WILL have the military Humvee contracts. Our troops would be using vehicles supplied by and our technology would be in the hands of a potential enemy. Never mind the fact that they have more bodies than we have bullets. That scares me to death
I personally do not think that any strategic technology should be allowed to be manufactured outside of the lower 48 in part or in whole.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

Greetings RunninLo. I hate to break it to you but our country has a long history of selling our weapons tech. and weapons themselves to other countries only to have them in turn used against us. It is my personal opinion that the Chinese will soon become our greatest ally. As their broken down communist system gives way to a more lucritive, consumer driven capitalist society, they will have no choice but to side with us against the ass-backward Middle East in order for 3 billion new car drivers to put gas in their new Hyundae/Chevy hybrids. The Religious extremist and filthy rich royal families that have a stranglehold on most of the Mid East countries and its oil will then be ousted by their own people when the people as a whole come to the realization that to live a better life, own a house and not have to worry about being blown up whlie driving their BMW's to the new McDonalds...all you have to do is play the game! As American/Chinese government officials pull the strings on the new Mid East puppet leaders, social order and precious crude oil will flow freely once again. Mark my words.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

I didn't know the "Humvee" was up for sale too??? I know GM is looking to possibly unload "Hummer" (H2 and H3) which no longer has ANYTHING to do with the military or the "Humvee."

Do you have a link to an article??? This is "new to me" and I try to keep up with what's going on.

Re: If General Motors goes away.

I keep hearin`all this talk about not giving buyers what they want.Let me ask,"What do buyers want?"Really...What`s the answer,a Prius?I don`t want a Prius,do you?I want fuel I can afford.Besides,GM makes miserly little gas sippers...quite a few.GM sells quite a few cars along with what the others are selling.Until last year, more than anyone else. Now #2.
I see an Impala.Don`t people want rear wheel drive?Wasn`t the Impala SS one of the few cars from that time most of us would have?(wasn`t that quite a few years ago, anyway?) Didn`t GM have 4 award winning vehicles in`08?
I`m sorry. In this economic climate,I can`t fault any business for having problems. In good times and a major corp is hurting?Boo-hoo for you. But,no manufacturer brought on these problems we are witnessing now.

Yeah, you'd have to go back quite a few years to get a RWD Impala, you'd have to go back to 1996
