Re: I bombed emissions

Hey i thought Mass was bad with the same regs as california but arizona who knew. Actually Mass just took a step back and before every two years there was a emissions check on 83 and up if it wasn't OBD2 then they sniffed it while it was on the dyno. Now there only checking OBD2 vehicles so 95 and back and wahoo let the big motors roll.

Re: I bombed emissions

turn the air mixture screws in till it stumbles a bit, that wll lean out the idle, as for the co, make sure your timing is running off of a ported source.

It depends on where in Az you are located. My dad lives in Lake Havasu City, AZ and there is no emissions test there.

Re: I bombed emissions

What carb are you running? Don't lean it out too much or your HC will go way up! Change oil, adjust timing to spec, replace air filter and you should be good to go.

Emissions here are by county - the metro areas require it on 67 and newer vehicles. I have a 68 C10 and have to have emissions every year. Have a 65 Chevelle and it is exempt - no emissions.

The inspection stations here are all run by the state - all the equipment and specs are the same and the guidelines are are tougher than Utah. That is the last place I had the truck I have registered and it passed emissions there also when it failed in AZ.

Re: I bombed emissions

idle at 1500rpm
turn fuel screws in and back out 1 1/2 turns
run it hard on the way there
dont let it sit and idle as you wait
tune up will help whether it be for emissions or just all around running better....

In order to pass the test, the vehicle has to meet emission levels for the year that vehicle was manufactured. Cats were first installed in the USA, in the '75 model year. Some imports didn't have them until '78 model years, as they passed emission standards without the cats.

But way back in time. In CA, you had to smog your vehicles going back to '62. Or was it '64 model year? Anyways, it was a long time ago

That was never fun. I remember having to pay $100 bucks under the table, just to get a smog check, so I could register a vehicle.

You're right....it didn't get "sophisticated" until federal standards in '75.

I think I remember my dad telling me that '66 was the first year of smog. We/he was the original owner of a '65 Mustang and we never had to smog it. My neighbor had a '67 Camaro and had to smog it into the 90's.

I remember my uncle having to slip old Barney a $50 to get his '72 F-100 smogged in the 80's If the station is caught doing any kind of fraud now, it is a 50K fine () and their license is yanked. In short, their livlihood is gone, so it ain't gonna happen.

Best of luck, but what are these "smog" tests you speak of, we don't even have inspections here

Re: I bombed emissions

In AZ if you have classic car insurance you can get an exemption. Just did it with my 83 swb and will do it with my 71. My wagon is 1965 and doesn't need it.

yeah i agree with you,, it does sound kinda odd that he would have to have a smog check, cool on the two 72's, got any pics of them??, I'm still working on my 1970 1/2'er, getting to the end of the restore, just a few more things to do.

Re: I bombed emissions

yip, gotta love the canadian emissions standards.

everything i drive doesn't need to be tested, but im pretty sure the standards or requirments get worse, or less, as you approach the 1987 model year (as in its easier to pass)..

dont know how the emissions works in the states.. do you just have a go/no-go policy?

Your only required to have cats on it if it originally came with cats. I believe its 66-74 or 75 you have to get the sniffer test but no visual and after 75 or so they start lifting the hood to make sure the smog equipment they came with is still on the vehicle ie.. charcoal canister, catalytic converter, smog pump. Its a pain. Its also only in the Maricopa county/ Phoenix area and Tucson. Most of the outlying areas are not required, unless you commute to Phoenix or Tucson for work.

I know....I had forgotten that cats didn't come on till 75 or 76. Up until the mid 90's smog was required back to '66. Because 76 is the cut off year for exemptions now, all vehicles smogged here are required to have cats.

Re: I bombed emissions

Ok so i changed the carb and love it. leaned the hell out of it and put a bottle of rubbing alcohol in tank and filled her up with 87 grade. ran it around town for about 20 minutes and took her to emissions and passed with flying colors. So the first time i went i had to spin the tires on the wheels. I asked a guy there why i needed to do that and he told me that if it doesnt pass the standard idle test then they use the wheels thing to get the engine working hotter like a second chance. the standard is 5.00 i got a 2.29 and the first read was 7.something. Ya daddys rolling in his c10 again

Re: I bombed emissions

What a change from when I was in AZ about 20 years ago when it was anything goes. You never knew what you`d see coming down the road.
I`ve never had to deal with smog, except for my wife`s newer stuff that always passed, except the`99 ZR2 that needed the converters replaced.I "cleaned" the converters out but was worried if it would pass the test.My drag racer/mechanic buddy said not to worry. We`d just put some magic juice(race fuel) in there and she`d pass with flying colors.

Congrats on passing. Again, I'm so glad SC has NONE of that crap. I hated having inspections done every year back when I lived in NY.
