actually swapping 4wd trans to 2wd isnt that bad. I bought the tail housing from whateferittakes trans parts for $50 shipped. The local trans shop had a 2wd shaft and swapped out for 1.5 hours labor. then just had to add exciter ring to shaft for the speed sensor, and get a speed sensor from any parts store for $20

A little heads up on keeping the 01' A/C system. The truck compressors won't work, I've tried. They require a pulsing power signal. If you give them a constant power source you will let the smoke out in about 5 seconds. Find a compressor out of a similar year car and you can use the same mounting bracket. As for the security stuff, that is very easy to have removed from the PCM tune, so don't worry about that. There's no extra "sensors or switches" needed.
For those on a budget, keeping the EFI is the cheapest and easiest route.

Hey All,
I have a 98 GMC Suburban that I'm going to pull the 5.7/4L60e (4wd) with transfer case and install it in my 69 2wd. I spoke to a tranny shop guy about the 4wd to 2wd swap, he said he could change the tail shaft & housing to set it up for a 2wd (said he had the parts laying around). I don't have the tranny out yet so I haven't actually had the work done at this point. I bought the Suburban because I got the whole thing for $1800. It had been T-boned in hte right side and totaled out by the insurance co. It was a friend's of mine and he let have it for the insurance buy back. I It has everything I should need except for a gas tank. I plan on using not only the engine/tranny/ EFI/Computer setup but also the front seats (power heated leather) and other things I can adapt such as the delay wiper motor, Radio/CD, overhead map light and such. I got my 2007 5.3L/4L60 powertrain from shram auto. I got it shipped up here (Canada) from the states and they converted the 4wd trans to a 2wd for an extra $150. The engine had less then 100 miles on it. The biggest problem was getting a broker and getting it across the border. I got the tubular engine mounts and trans cross member from performance online and got a local fab shop to cut me some adapter plates. I rewired the engine and have it set in place. I now need to wire the truck to the engine and I hope it will work.. LOL.
As for tuning for the security and emissions and 4x4 stuff I will be using EFI Live to reflash the computer to get rid of all of that. Which will have to be done before it will even start.. Good luck with your build. It has been a fun experience for me, just wish I had time to finish it.. Trevor

I'm guessing you have actually used one (truck style) then. I have tried 2 different truck compressors and both fried when given a constant 12v signal at the clutch. I wonder what you did differently? Anyways, the compressor off a 00' Camaro that I have now, works fine with a constant signal. I also talked with a former GM tech I work with and he confirmed my findings about the truck vs. car compressors.

tk If you don't mind me asking what was the total bill to get the engine and tranny from the US to your place in Alberta?

So what exactly were they off of? I tried ones off an 01' LQ4 and an 03' 5.3L. Both fried. How do you have them wired up? Are they tied into the PCM?

they were for a 00 5.3 silverado.....i used a vintage air/ and classic auto air underdash units....the VA air one went to a tri-nary sw. that turned both the fans and A/C clutch 'on'.....on the CAA one, i used a bi-nary sw. to just turn the compressor on.....
i did not use the PCM for the A/C controls..... they were wired like such - power signal from control panel to engauge the compressor cluch goes to -a bi-nary or tri-nary (pending on how you wanna run your electric fans/etc) pressure switch - then from the pressure sw. to the compressor clutch... when you say you fried them, did you have freon in the system??? how did you have them wired up? |

I think the total bill was around $3800 and that included getting it here. I tried looking around here at the wreckers, but they were insane. The one wanted $4500 for a 2001 6.oL and 4L80 combo. He wasn't even sure if the trans worked and it had over 200,000km on it.

No, no freon. All I did was hook up power to make sure the clutch would engage. Both of them started smoking within about 5 seconds. I wouldn't think having the system charged would make a difference, but you never know. Now I wonder if the earlier models had a different style compressor. When I looked through the GM info for the 2 I had, they both mentioned the pulsing signal.

Sounds like you had the clutch hooked up backwards and smoked the internal diode. It is easy to do on some designs.
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is the term you are looking for..
