Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
What happened to crash, it looks way to tall for hauling something in the bed. And don't go to pirate4x4 with this question because they get really offensive, and why did you snap like that.Eturn said,"i would have left in stock." Not you should, but a lot of people said the same thing which I first stated, The big wheels look bad on older trucks, but stick to what you want. Polished looks better on than chrome on this style.

OYMC, that 18-inch wheeled 4x4 you posted looks fantastic! Fairly useless off road, but still fantastic. btw, could you keep the lift kit out of your font size? I'm on dial-up.

+1 on the truck you posted for reference! I probably wouldn't build one like that, but I really like the way it looks. I learned 20+ years ago when I was building daily rider old Harley's that the only person that HAS to like what you do is you...

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
I agree with you guy's:
I did get a little defensive, I just can't stand it when people think your "Wrong" for doing something different. As for "Project Crash", she has not beed forgotten, just put on hold for the time being. After getting the 72' 4x4, I kind of got side tracked. But don't worry, I am also building a 1950 Chevy Sedan Delivery for a customer, at the same time. Needless to say, from the time I wake up, until the time I'm asleep, all I do is fabricate, and restore... Picking up the 50' chassis from the sand blaster today... True 4X4's... There is a place for all 4X4's... I own two Toyota BJ40 Land Cruiser's (Factory Diesel FJ40) that I had imported from South America. One has the stock suspension with 2" lift shackles and 33" tires on 15" wheels. The other has a mild spring over axle lift, steering knuckles turned, Pinion angles set, cross over steering, and 33" Toyo's of 15" wheels... These are trucks I don't mind taking up in the hills, and getting dirty, and I would never dream of running 18" wheels. The 72' on the other hand, is a very clean short bed, fleet side truck, and I would hate for it to get beat up for my own $h*T$ and giggles. The Black 72' 4X4 photo I posted is running 20" wheels, which I think are way to big myself, espeacially on a 35" tire. 38" tires on 18" wheels I think would look good. When I was 18 years old I built a 1994 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 Pickup, thinking I could have both a Pavement Princess, and a wheeler. This Truck had a "Full Throttle" 9 " suspension lift, 3" Body lift, 40" Boggers, and 15X14 weld wheels. The result turned into a truck that needed an alignment everytime I took it Wheelin' (JUNK). It was only good for driving on road, and with Bias Ply tires, it was anything but comfortable...BUT IT LOOK SWEET! I ended up buying 35" MT tires on 15X10 welds for the road... SORRY ABOUT THE FONT ISSUE... This picture is of my Sister and my 94' turd... I've also attached a photo of my 72', and my two "OFF ROAD" Land Cruisers. The two photos of the Green 77' land Cruiser were taken in Costa Rica. |

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
I really like your Land Cruisers - very nice. As for the rims, 17" rims look fine in my opinion with 38" tires and if you like 18" rims, run them.
38" tires with 4.10 gears is going to be a bit rough. At a minimum I think you would want 4.56's. Thanks for keeping things calmed down - that is how we like this site to operate.

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
well nice collection and the reason why you may have needed the alignment was because the ifs it pushs everything apart when flexing

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
Lifting a truck with a independent front suspension is never a good idea that is why you have alignment problems with it.That is the only down fall of a newer truck,You have to get a 1ton to get a straight axle in the front or buy a swap kit.

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
May I remind you GENTLEMEN that these old trucks came with 17.5" wheels as an option from Heaven ( Chevrolet/ GMC ). Did anyone solve the worlds problems by defining a wheel & tire combination that would stop the slaughter of mankind. Perspective here please. I run what I like on my truck because I like them. You may run whatever you wish as well. He may choose to run whatever he wants. Can you win a dessert race with mudders on, I think not but if you do, you've proven me wrong. Do Baja trucks climb over boulders and travel through Mud? Does the tractor puller do what he want's, how he wants to do it? Take the V8's out of the engine compartment Gentlemen and put a little 6 banger in there instead. We'll all get to the finish line. God bless those who have served North America to keep this country Four Wheelin, in whatever style.

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
Play nice....
Ok, according to Volume 34, No. 12 of Truckin: It is from Monterey, 6" Skyjacker lift, 35" Toyo Open Country MT's, Weld Cheyenne 20x12's and 4:10 gears. It's a beautiful truck that will probably never see mud...but who cares! The guy who had it built did it to suit him and I am sure we would all love to have it, including rock crawlers who have six different colors of paint on their rigs and multiple dents...(there's an inherent beauty in that as well!) |

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!

And that truck from what i have heard has over 200k in parts and labor, which i don't belive is true but could be its a great show truck chrome and stainless everywhere. And he didn't do the work himself, but thats okay as longs as the owner likes it. So glad your doing what you want and keep us updated.

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
To the OP. Here is my burb' with a 7" lift and both axles moved back 1" (equal clearance addition as another inch or two of lift). Tires are 38x15.50R16. I would not recommend running 38's with 4.10 gears. That's what I had originally and didn't like it, not enough RPM. I now run 5.13's and gained power and MPG. And I'm making a lot more torque than the LS1 you mentioned wanting to run.

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
^I agree with him. You can get by with a 4" lift and 35's and 6" for 38"s. Might need a little fender trimming, but if you use zero rates to move the axles to center them you'll also gain another inch of heigth.
4.10 gears are OK with 35" tires, buty with 38's you will want at least 4.56 gears. The above Suburban with a 6 liter is running an engine that has a broader torque band than the LT1. Hence he can get away with 5.13's for a couple reasons. Weight of vehicle compared to yours, engine powerband and heavier duty running gear. |

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
Are you guys looking at the 5.xx rear-ends running automatic tranny's or do you have manuals?
I know that it all comes down to gearing, and even though I know that I'm running 4.10's, I think I could move up to the bigger tire, thanks to my SM465 and the ungodly low granny....... granted, there's a lot to be desired in the upper ranges, but I don't think I'd need to worry about the low speed stuff. and, that's a mighty sharp looking 'burb

Re: 6" Lift or 8" Lift Suspension? HELP!
Thanks for the compliments on the burb'. Another heads up on my combo though. Due to the width of the tires, I still hit the rear of the front fender when turned all the way if I'm not careful. Something as simple as pulling into a driveway too fast at full lock, will flex enough to hit. I plan to add another inch of lift or narrow the axles to fix this. If I taco the fenders again after it's painted, I'll be inventing new words!
It'll probably be for sale next fall if your really interested.
