Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
I just put 1406 on my 1972 Jimmy. Carb comes with a video, tells you how to adjust the carb. Very easy job. Lots of luck. I have made 3 trip in the last few years to pick up vehicles and drove them home. It's aways an adventure. CO to NC 1700 miles in 2 days. Ca to NC 2800 miles in 5 days. TX to NC 1200 miles in 2 days. Best of luck.

Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
I never thought they were that good(so I have been told), I have had no experience with them so I don't know. The previous owner told me was having some trouble with it....what trouble I'm not sure. I found an old school shop in Santa Rosa that I am going to bring it to before I go, I'm sure he can dial in the Carter.......if its not shot. hmmmmm

Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
Take pictures and say a prayer before you leave. I have been lucky, never had any major problems but look the truck over good and replace anything that you think may give you any problems. The Jimmy had not been driven much in the last 5 years before I picked it up. Had to replace the tires and fuel pump before I got on the road. Tires had dryrot and the fuel pump started leaking at the tire shop. Luck they caught the leaking pump. It had a holley carb that started leaking before I got home. It's a wonder it didn't caught fire. That being said, I hope your trip goes well.

back home and no major problems, the truck ran great, 1870 miles. I'm quite tired but I just wanted to check in and say THANK YOU all for the tips and offers to help!

Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
The trip report, first off no pictures...I forgot the camera. I flew out to Sacramento on Weds morning. Caught a greyhound bus (filled with rif raf) to Oakland then another bus on to Santa Rosa (more rif raf). NOTE, I do not mind the rif raf per sey, it's just sad/mad to see people with talent pissing it away due to bad decisions in life. The truck owner picks me up at the bus stop and away we go to his house 15 miles away. We turn the corner to his street and there she is, Beautiful!. I jump out of his car and proceed to access the true condition of the truck, it is everything he said it was. I had ordered a new 1406 Edlebrock carb before I left and had it shipped to him, it was waiting in the garage. I made arrangements to get a hotel that night in Santa Rosa (Holiday inn express 150 bucks, ouch) every damn thing is expensive in California! After a few celebratory Coronas at the hotel I'm fast asleep.
Thurs morning I get up and drive cautiously to the hot rod shop http://www.dimatteosstreetrods.com/ to get her looked over. I say cautiously because the sticker on the truck expired in Feb 2005. I met Mike (the owner) for the first time, he is an stand up guy with a great talent. One of his guys went thru the truck checking and draining the fluids, pulling off the wheels, tightening the steering box, etc... and installing the new carb. 5 hours and 450 bucks (a very fair price) later I'm ready to start home. I take off south in the afternoon and make it as far as Livermore,Ca. Driving down the interstate at 9:30 pm all my lights go out except the headlights. I get off the freeway and head into an industrial park to see what's up. A dead short is the problem and I cannot find it, no more night driving....so I sleep in the cab(I'm 6 ft) and get up the next morning at day break ready to continue the trip (without brake lights). I drove all the way to Phoenix( a very very hot drive with no A/C) and got a hotel (Raddission) downtown for 50 bucks total (thanks to my lovely my wife and priceline) The truck never overheated, it ran the whole time at 190 indicated and rose to 200 while climbing some long hills. I drove the gal at 65 to 70 MPH the whole way as long as the roads were smooth. It's a handful if the roads are rough. I left Phoenix and stopped off in Tucson to see my Aunt who is 98. Made it to Las Cruces,NM just as the sun set and grabbed a room at the Marriott (99 bucks total). A couple more Coronas and off to bed. I got up early to make the final long ass run to Austin, everything went smooth, humming along thru the desert at 70 mph and about 13 mpg. I saw lots of breakdowns out in that desert and was praying one of em would not be me. Da trip |

Da trip sounded fun. At least you didn't have to ride with the rif raf in your new truck on the way home!

Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
yes, a body lift, looks about 4 inches. Also a front end kit with new springs and shocks. The lift is a bit much for me and not all that safe. I'm sure I will be changing it.

Sharp looking truck. That's pretty cool to get it from the original owner. And I'm glad he found some mirrors to put on it for ya

I brought that mirror with me on the plane now, I did not have a rear view mirror until I got home. BTW, The short was at the license plate light, go figure.

Re: going to pick up our new 1972 4X4 shorty...
nice looking truck, are you going to add lower molding?
are they 35" tires, looks like 10" rims to me... If you pull the body lift you can get a complete 4x4 body mount set from LMC (or other baord vendors maybe) for about $150. That's what I used on mine and it looks original...
