Re: My 64 build
My 64 was the first shop/rat style truck I have ever owned... Since I bought it my 68 has not come out of the garage... Its sad.. I spent 4 years building my 68 and its nearly perfect but when I take it out I worry about it... My 64 I don't have to worry about and its just pure fun..

Re: My 64 build
My vote.... keep the 6!
You just don't see them, and that' why I'm leaving my 250 in my '69. We're planning on pulling it out this winter for a rebuild. Parts a quite expensive for them, but definitely look good when their done. And I'm really digging the barn lumber idea; I think it will look killer!

Re: My 64 build
Well Ive not got much to update other than Ive been driving the tires off of my old truck. Cant wait to get a 5speed in it. Ive struck out on the barn wood but have located a sawmill that has some white oak that has been on strips drying for a few months that has turned. Im going first thing in the morning to pick it up and then off to get exhaust ran. I love the old look. Dont have to worry about it like C10addict said. I went to the parts store in it a few nights ago and its was a hour before I could leave. Everybody was checking it out. I dont have a floor in it and some would look and see the rear disc and was shocked. Thats what I like the most about it. Folks think its just a turd.

Re: My 64 build
great to hear...i love the parts store story...it's old & crusty but somewhat modern at the same time...how did the wiring turn out, & how does it ride?

Re: My 64 build
I doubt that the white oak will be dry enough yet. you will have a shrinkage problem

Re: My 64 build
It drive and rides very well. Was suprised. The wiring was very simple and straight foward. I would recommend the Rebel harness. And I was wondering about the oak. Im going to go look at it. He didnt say how long it had been drying exactly buy he said it was already turned a good grey shade.

Re: My 64 build
I got my floor put in the bed. I am pleased with the way it turned out. Ive had so much fun with this truck. It gets more looks than most nice old cars in trucks in town. With no worries. Wish I could figure this point and shoot Sony camera out. Sorry for the blur.

Re: My 64 build
Going to put a 5 speed in it to make hwy cruising a little better. Im going to clean up the inside and under the hood. Im hoping to do a 2 carb set up on the 6 cyl not sure yet. Im pretty stuck on keeping the 6cyl it runs very smooth.

Re: My 64 build
Im using like 95 Impala SS rotors with Gbody (metric) calipers. I bought a set of brackets from Speedway Item #: 91641010. I used the rubber hose off the front of a Gbody car and ran over to my new hard line. Built a bracket to joint the too and clip it on. I used a 70 Corvette master cyl for manual brakes. Bolts right on and uses the stock truck rod. I ended up with around $200 dollars in the rear set up. I got all my parts from Napa. Here is the link to the caliper brackets.

Re: My 64 build
Yeah, that's really cool. I definitely want to know how to do this...it looks like you can piece together a good braking system without spending $700 or more for a kit from someone....

Re: My 64 build
Yes they have the proper radius to weld to the axle tube. I installed the pads in the caliper and took my air hose and put air to the caliper and compressed everything tight on the rotor. I used a magnetic angle finder to keep them on 90 and welded the brackets. I takes two sets of hands to get it tacked. One person to hold the air on the caliper and keep it at a 90 and the other to weld unless you could come up with a fitting to put air on it without holding it. And by the way you wont have a parking brake but its no big deal to me.

Re: My 64 build
Park brake can be mounted on the input shaft to the rear differential. I think there are kits available, or just cobble together the parts; rotor, caliper with mechanical linkage, then make up some form of actuator, foot peddle, or use the handle and cable parts that are already there. Just an idea.

Re: My 64 build
The newer GM vehicles that have 4 wheel discs, use a shoe assembly inside the rear rotor for the e-brake. The '95 Impala SS is this way....which is what the rotors used here are for.
