Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

Finally got some help with the manly part of my build. Neighbor stopped over and helped get the cab onto the dolly I built out of a pallet and some casters.

Awesome. Did the same thing for mine, for a dolly.

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

I would recomend boxing the frame. These frames are weak. After inspecting my frame I found a crack under the crossmember in back of the cab. Now's the time to reinforce if your planing to run a bigger motor or hauling anything. A few extra hr and $ is well worth it.

Pics won't load, but just a bare rolling chassis. Time to build.

Look great so far!
How did the sandblasting turn out?
Did you ever box the frame?

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

I haven't touched it since these pictures were taken 3+ years ago. Life kinda got in the way. I have been collecting a few parts for the rear end, drums, shoes, etc, but I have decided to swap it to 4 wheel disc brakes instead. Haven't sandblasted anything, yet, but that is on the list. Actually thinking about soda instead...

Will try to upload a picture if I can ever figure out how. (new phone, no computer)

Happy Building, Guys and Gals!

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

Download the photobucket app on your phone. Take pics and the phone will auto transfer to photobucket. pull up your thread and touch your menu button, pull up photo bucket , leaving your open internet thread here. Go to album in photobucket and touch the pic you want. touch menu again and pull up the links to the pic. touch the 4th one or last one and it will say " copied". go back to menu and internet, pull up the forum and the thread. reply or edit as normal and touch the screen where you want the "copy" link to rest, or you may have a button to do this on your phone. bingo

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

The weather has started to break here, so my son and I decided to get outside and do something. We both want 4 wheel disc brakes, but we also have a deadline to drive the truck to the Good guys show the weekend of July 4th. So in the interest of time, we'll keep the rear end drum brakes for now, seeing as we already have most of what we need. We got the drums installed on the hubs of the 14 bolt diff.

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

I know I have the other wheel studs somewhere around here, and when I find them, I'll get them installed. Also decided to take a closer look at the frame. I'm not going to box the rails at this point, because I see no reason. My trouble points are few and far between. The front rail on the passenger side appears to have been smashed in and repaired by someone who has no idea what to do.

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

That trouble spot is ahead of the front spring mount behind the bumper, so not structural, only cosmetic. Easy fix. My only other trouble spot is the right rear cab mount. A little heat, some welding and we'll be ready to go.

Re: My 58 GMC project--"CYRUS"

Forgot to mention the broken shock mount on the passenger front. Typical for this year truck. Some plate steel is in order to fix this. I think I have some in my iron iron pile.

That is where they always broke. Stamping or engineering defect. Even in the 70's when I first got my truck and one broke you could not find them in wrecking yards. I just made two out of flat stock, worked fine for 25 years...

I remember you saying that before, and I was doing some measuring earlier, can I just use a flat plate with the proper offset? (1-5/8 from what I can see)

Thanks Kim, it feels good to be working on it, again!!
