Depending on where it broke off at, I had one break once and used a vise-grip temporarily (actually for a few months) as a replacement until I could get it replaced. It is a little unwieldy, but it works.

One cold morning I let my truck warm up in neutral and when I went to put it in reverse...puuuullllll-SNAP! Broke the ball stud off inside the column. Gunked-up bad. A non-tilt auto shifter is interchangable but the root cause may still need to be addressed.
