Thanks for the support. I have followed your build also. You did a excellent job with your 70 GMC. Are there any plans for the 97?

This weekend I took the front end apart as far as I could. At least I can see what I'm looking at. The driver side still needs to come off. Next week I'll work on getting the bed off to reach the fuel pump. It will be nice to be able the move it around.

I also did some work to my 98 DD. I prefer the Chevy to the GMC. I took the old 93 chrome grill and air-dam that I saved from this project. I also smoked the signal lights wile I was at it. When it worms up I want to paint the bumper and grill black.

Not much to report this week. My father in-law has been having heart trouble and was hospitalized for a week so I spent time with him. They have no idea what caused his heart problems, but he's been released and is now recovering at home.

I did manage to get the bed cover and tailgate off. I got the bed unbolted and filler neck and wiring harness. I didn't have anyone to help me lift it off today, so I'm going to have to wait until next weekend because I'll be going out of town for work this week; anybody live in Rock Springs Wyoming?

After doing that, I had to figure out how to tug it out of the backyard. I totally forgot about the hitch on the truck. When I bought the truck it had one on it, the good part was it was in two pieces. I simply flipped it over and bolted it in. I never got around to cutting the hole in the rollpan, so I did that too. I used the front tow hooks on my 97 Z71 to tug it out. I had to put it in 4 low because of the mud. My brother and I pushed it up the driveway while my wife steered. Thanks Jeff.

also, i notice that you have the same problem with your passenger speaker cover (doesnt fit properly) does anyone on here have a solution to this problem?

Hope you don't mind the thread jack but I see your running wide tires on the front of your 98 DD, Would you mind sharing what size they are and the wheel width ? Also, Do you have any issues driving in the rain ?

I'd like to run wides on the front of my 74 project since I got a smokin deal on four 10" Eagle Alloys.

I will be painting the rest of the dash, I'll post lots of pics as I do it. As far as the speaker cover, there is a piece that holds the speaker cover that is sticking up. There is a tab on that piece that is supposed to go under the dash to hold the speaker piece down. I took the cover off to see what size speakers they were and didn't get the cover on tight.

No problem. The tires are 295/50/15 on 15/8's They do surprisingly well for the width. I've been driving them in the rain and snow. The only problem is they tend to follow the road when there are ruts, they handle like a NASCAR.

I finally pulled the bed off this weekend with the help of my brother; thanks Jeff. I also changed the fuel pump out, Found that the soft line to the pump was split. Since the old pump wouldn't come on I changed it out for a new one. I also gave it a quick tune up. Runs like a champ.










I've been spending the weekdays in Wyoming for work and haven't had much time for projects on the weekends between keeping the house going and trying to spend time with family. I've got two more weeks in Rock springs.

Do you happen to remember were you got the helper bag kit? Also where you running the fill up for the bags at?

It's been a while, but I think it was JCWitney. They are Air Lift brand. They are good for keeping the axle off the frame and towing, but they only lift 2 inches at 100psi. They are ratted for 500lds. There is a larger two compartment bag kit they sell that would haul and lift more.

My rear bags are on elec. valves hooked to a compressor and reserve tank. The kit comes with a shredder valve for each side.

Where is the love? Whether you like the grill or not, that is one nice truck.You are starting a rebuild with something that is nicer than some of the finished projects I've seen. Love it or hate it, the unique look draws attention to the truck(which is why most of us do this in the first place).Who wants a truck that looks like everyone else's? BTW,Great flames,are you self taught or did you go somewhere to learn? Good luck on your build!

Thank you, I was shocked at the negative comments I received after starting this thread. I know how hard it is to break the norm and do something different. Good or bad it sends us in a direction of process that we go through and nobody does it right the first time. A lot of these things are just trial and error. I realize to make the majority of people happy, I would have to put the stock grill on. It's easy to stick a stock grill from the factory on and have a truck that looks like everyone elses.

As far as the flames go, in school I studied commercial art and I've always been good at drawing, many of the ideas came from magazines. I've been painting cars since 94 in my garage, I've always done it as a hobby. The purple came from a truck I'd pained years ago but was wrecked. Although I do realize purple has gone out of style, the question now is to repaint the truck with a newer scheme.

I welcome yours, and others, opinion.

This weekend was really good. After spending the week out of town I spent lots of time with the family. I did manage to pull the truck out and give it a good wash. I also pulled the drivers fender, and took it for a drive around the neighborhood. My neighbors are used to that by now.

Although I do realize purple has gone out of style, the question now is to repaint the truck with a newer scheme.

Sorry if I offended you with my negativity on your grille, I suppose it depends on your region. Around here a truck with a clean stock grille will stand out in the crowd, Seems a grille swap is the first mod everyone does.

As for paint, The white/purple looks sweet but as you mention a little out dated. That's as far as I'll go with that, Everyone should build their rides the way THEY want them and not worry about others.

It would be a bland world if everyone done everything the same way !!!

Now, Looks like your moving right along and making good progress..... I have another question if you don't mind ?

I see the cut-out in your roll pan for the hitch, What did you use for a plate bracket flip up/flip down/side flip ?

I'm not offended but I wasn't expecting the focus to be on the grill but rather the truck as a whole. Everything's cool, we're moving on.

As for the new paint, not sure what I want to do, so still researching. Flames are out, two-tones are in but going out and solids are always in. If I do repaint the truck, I'm keeping the hood and fenders to hang on my garage wall and I'll find new ones. But for now, that's a long way away.

For the hidden hitch, as of a month ago, I'd hadn't even cut it out. Up until I pulled it out of my side yard I hadn't used it since installing the roll pan. But the plans are, I'm going to buy a flip-up one.

tonight I pulled the front bag brackets out. Tomorrow I need to cut the upper bag brackets down. I put 2X4's back in between frame and the lower A arms to prevent damage to the tie rods. I still might notch the frame to make room for the tie rods. I also need to modify the exhaust pipe. That's going to be a challenge with the 5 speed trany.

For the rear I was looking a Ekstensive Metal Works 2 link. The kit comes with everything but bags.

If you don't mind me asking. What is the current front bag set up you have? How much drop is it providing? Would you recommend it for a daily driver? I wouldn't mind having bags but don't want to go as far as notching the frame. I guess I'm looking that's kind of a bolt in.

The kit was from AIM Industries, I would not recommend them. I have had to modify every bracket the gave me. That being said a bagged truck rides like a Cadillac. There are a few kits out there that are bold on. Most will require cutting the frame, but there are ones that come with lower A arms that the bag bolts to. The upper cup is long enough to push the bag outside the frame.

I originally bagged this truck eight years ago. When I bought these brackets, I swear they sent me ones for a Ford. The first time I put this kit on and dropped it down it was actually higher than when I put the bags on. So I took the bag brackets out, cut them down and notched the frame to get it down to where it sits now.
So what I'm doing now is cutting the brackets down even further so that I can obtain the super-slammed look.








First off, removing the inner fender bracket.

I started by cutting the upper bracket 1.25, I cut them down until the tie rod was as close as possible to the frame. The upper bracket is now 4.5 inches tall.







Test fit.







Tonight I finished the drivers side. I'll post pic tomarrow.
