In my city the trash pickup is in the back alley such as yours...possible city vehicle? I know i would be livid if that happened to me...just think ahead to when she's repaired and don't give up on her, looks fixable.

Re: I Can't believe some people

Whatever it was it had to be big. Back in HS I witnessed some gal put her Pinto wagon sideways into the back of a 456 long bed and bend her car in 2 without doing any damage to the truck, she must of been like 50mph when she hit. I also got rear ended one time at about 35mph by a early FJ that did no damage to either my 66 nor the FJ. Although my poor sister (sitting on freshly armoralled seat) slid out from under the seat belt on to the floor ;-)

It kind of looks like the brackets on your bumper gave out and then with it bolted to the bed messed it up, if the brackets had held you likely would've been ok... IMO

that lady in the background is actually my mom......lol. I was actually hoping to have my frame shortened because I don't like long beds, so maybe this will be a good thing.

Re: I Can't believe some people

Would be interesting to see what the other vehicle looks like. I had a late 80's Iraqi Malibu ( GM produced with 3 speed standard transmission ) T bone the front axle on my 62 K10 from 30 MPH. His car looked like a TR7 (wedge shaped) put the hood into the windshield when the officer arrived he asked what the car had hit. When we looked for damage we couldn't find anything on the truck. The officer was in hysterics, bent my NOS rim though.

Re: I Can't believe some people

If you just have liability insurance, your better off repairing it yourself. It looks like a 20 mph hit to me. Is the back of the cab damaged? Are you sure it has frame damage? It may just be the bed shifted and crossbeams are bent. Most body shops don't like writing estimates for older vehicles because they have no parts books on them and don't know where to find good used parts. I suggest finding a clean quarter panel on your own or complete bed. If you are covered, insurance companies will try to salvage the vehicle for an agreed amount. They will probably say the repair is more than the value of truck. You need to prove how much it is worth by showing them the market price on other similiar condition 62's.You can salvage the vehicle and buy it back, but the title will say "salvage". If you want a clear title that does not say "salvage", do not get the insurance company involved and fix it yourself.

Re: I Can't believe some people

factorystock- yes the back of the cab is damaged near the corner next to the the gas cap. Yes I am sure the frame is damaged. The end of the frame is bent down. Don't I want them to say the damage is more than the truck so I can get more money? I have never done this before, so I don't really understand. The way I was thinking about fixing all of this was

A- Get enough money back to buy another 62-3-4-5-6 truck

or

B- get money back from them and use it to cut my frame short and the bed. Since I really want a short bed truck. My friend owns a fab shop and he said he'll shorten the bed and frame for 2000

Or could I really find a similar condition chevy on lets say craigslist and they'll just give me money back based off the chevy I showed them?

Re: I Can't believe some people

Its worth a try, but they have a flat rate, if they total it out for the age vs damage, let them pay you off, give them $50.00 back, buy the truck back from them, then go shopping, just remember that once this is done the truck by law (in calif ) from the insurance gets a salvage title, which if you were to insure it and something else happened you only get a few cents on the dollar. But you might be able to get a short bed for the money and put your stuff into it... watch craigslist. ( not mine )

Re: I Can't believe some people

Back in the 80’s I had a 67 Chevelle destroyed by a red light runner. At the time the cost to buy back the wrecked vehicle was 10% of the settlement value. I had a sympathetic adjuster and he gave me the car back for free, so being friendly may keep some coin in your pocket. I pulled the entire drivetrain and put it in another car which I sold for a profit, which financed my next project. Once in a while a bad deed can end up with a happy ending, hopefully it will work out that way for you.

Re: I Can't believe some people

I'm assuming its insured then.If it goes the way I think its going to go, I would get as much as you can for your 62 and buy another one ( maybe a 63 shortbed ). I have a feeling the repair costs will be close the the value of truck. Remember blue book means nothing, you need to show the insurance companies what these trucks go for in similar condition and equipment. Get at least 5 or 6 examples off the internet. Why trouble with getting the vehicle back to pre accident condition when your title will be toast?

Re: I Can't believe some people

in mississippi i have used state farm all my life. other than deer the only wreck we had was a 70 datsun pickup. state farm said it was a "border line total" and left it up to us as to what to do. so the amount of money between border line & complete total was very little. if you can work it that way, take the border line total amount, keep your title & repair your truck. however with a truck that old good luck if you dont have a stated coverage amount. even my 02 duramax 4wd is only covered with liability & un-insured motorist. i hope you dont have a cheapie insurence co like progressive. oh yeah i buy salvage!

Re: I Can't believe some people

The way the truck is damaged and the fact you found very little in the way of debris from another vehicle I'd say there is a good possibility that it was backed into. Judging by the looks of that road it could be that someone up the hill forgot to set their parking brake or a new driver not knowing how to use a clutch. Who knows. It's either that or the Las Lomas HS football team jumped up and down on the bumper until it snapped.

There was a guy on craigslist in Concord that was giving away a 63-66 shortbed frame just last week. The frame widths are different so might have been some work to make your cab fit. His ad is gone but he responded to my first email so I think I have his email address.

Keep the truck.. its a gift from your dad. Did you have insurance (full coverage) to get it repaired?

May not be as bad you think to get it fixed. In reality since it was hit from the back you should be able "at the worst" to get it back halfed (new rear frame half) and a new bed put on it and the back of the cab fixed. Or hopefully just get the frame yanked back into shape and then a new bed and the cab repairs.

Get in contact with "Lil Red" at 4-5-6chevytrucks@sbcglobal.net and see if he can help you out.

Oh, and guys, give SixteyDos a break and stop posting 'bout his mom. That just ain't right.......

Re: I Can't believe some people

According to literature I've read the all new 63 frame was heat treated to stiffen the strength of the steel so the gauge of metal could be reduced to lighten the truck by 200lbs. 62 and earlier frames could be welded on since they were not heat treated.

Re: I Can't believe some people

Thanks for that tidbit, that's something I did not know. I worked at Peterbilt back in the 70's and every new truck left with a sticker on the rails warning not to weld anywhere on the frame due to heat treating.

Gotta wonder how true it is - the tempering made up for losing 200 pounds of material, boxing, and an x-member. I remember seeing several brand new late 60's long bed Chevy trucks with a cab over camper, with a bent frame allowing the front of the camper to rest against the back of the cab. Doesn't seem like that would have happened if GM hadn't deleted the x-member.

Re: I Can't believe some people

My guess is the frame after 62 had more spring to it. When the campers were removed did the frame return to it's original position or did it remained bowed? In 63 GM was desperately trying to regain it's position after the tribulations of some torsion bars breaking since 1960 in light duty but especially medium and heavy duty. They felt a whole new approach was in order, new engines, new transmissions and suspensions. However overlooked, the cab remained the same and customers did not see the new changes as the appearance remained the same. 1964 transitioned the line with the new cab matching the existing Ford profile. With Chevrolet's superior new suspension from 63, it regained it's sales and that is most likely why you see more 64-66 and less of the previous years, least of all my beloved 1963. Course if you look at jonzcustomshop photo's of his trip to his local yard ( http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=271752) I think every 63 manufactured ended up in this yard in Montana. Bitter you bet. I don't hate you Jonz just that there is an abundance of parts so close by. OK maybe a bit. LOL
