Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
My thoughts also. Are AD latches not as secure as TF latches? It seems to be mostly AD owners who are changing.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
When i was learning to drive a few years back I was learning in a field with my grandfather 51. I went to make a turn and hit a hole the door popped open and I was out on the ground on my backside.
I think the price is fine and bear claws are the way to go unless you like the thrill of leaving a moving truck backwards. |

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
Yeah we've talked about this before. If you grew up in the 60's riding in 50's cars or trucks you know stories of people, kids, dogs, groceries falling out of them.
The amazing thing is I've only ever heard mostly funny stories and never the tragic stories you'd think would go hand in hand with this kind of thing. Which is why I want to be double extra careful about my TF. Yeah, its a bunch of money but I bet it sounds pretty damned cheap compared to what MIGHT happen if a door came open at speed. |

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches

This is the exact reason I am investing in a set.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
Yeah Coach, it just seems to me like (relatively) cheap insurance much like us pulling the gas tanks out of our cabs and installing safety belts. Will we ever have a fire in the cab? A violent collision? Chances are, no. But do you want to potentially stake your LIFE on it?

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
any worn out latch may pop open, i've had doors pop open on doors with sagging doors and worn out latches too, but never with new latches.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
If you're a tight a$$ like me, you might buy some bearclaws off of Ebay like this @ $34.95:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-Bear-C...ab2af2&vxp=mtr Then try this: Then this: I made a spacer and put it inside the jamb pocket so the sheet metal wouldn't collapse when I tightened the striker up. It took a little time, but I have bearclaws for less than $50. (Ogre, you have plenty of yellow paint left, don't you?) This setup is compatible with blackdiesel's one-piece window setup, and I added power door locks that mount inside the door, just above the upper hinge.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
I admit LOVING the idea of $34.95 vs. $349, but I admit to not really having the fabrication chops to pull it off. For myself I think I'll go with the Trique setup just for ease of installation and reliability.
Looks like you pulled it off successfully though. Big congrats to you! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
Personally I think with the Trique kit you don't have to fab the outer handle mechanizim, the lock plate or the inner handle. You could easily take a day or two if your not inclined just to fab all that up. If your into making each piece that goes into you truck then the $39 kit is the way to go but if you have other things to do then I like the kit from Trique

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
I agree that the Trique kit is pretty "trique". I've just been trying to get better at fabbing stuff, so I went for it. If I bought everything on this truck that was screwed up I'd go to the poor house!

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
They're power, remote operated, no handles inside or out. Emergency cables run to the top of the kick panels inside and to the wheel well outside.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
I had to go and do everything backwards ... I wanted to be able to mount my door poppers in the cab corners. Don't remember want brand the bear claws were as this has been done a while.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
Yep, the only thing is with nothing in the door opening the doors will be operated by a button for the popper for day to day use, and then a small release handle mounted in the corner for an emergency.

Re: My bolt in Bear Claw latches
I didn't see a part # on the Trique website for a 1972 C10. Which one do you use?
