Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

Man what a difference 14 months is half the time what some shops take just to paint a paint a truck. I really like your choice of color and wheels.

I have friend who send his panel to the paint shop 5 years ago. I told him just give the title. He is never going to finish it. He is better off finding a another one. I can't believe he didn't already choke the guy out. I think I am enrolling in some painting school and paint my own trucks.

I took my 63 to a shop justto spray black primer and this is what turned out. he sprayed black bumper paint to give me a satin finish. LOL I left it and said when he decided to spray it right call me back. I am done dealing painters.

Awsome job on the truck.... I think your the first person I've seen to install a gen iv vintage air setup in a 64-66 truck.. Have any coments about the install?? I currently have and old air setup and think its was way too over priced for how it ended up performing....

The install was easier than I thought it would be. I had to fab a box on the firewall to make some room behind the evap, but everything mounted nice. I welded the evap bracket to the under side of the dash before paint. I don’t have much road time on tuck yet as I have been working allot but when I charged the system sitting in my garage the cab got down to 52 degs with every thing closed up.

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

JGross,
Does the gen iv evaporator move a lot of air? My old air setup would get cold enough but there wasn’t enough flow to keep the cab real cool. Would just make the summer heat in Louisana just tolerable, and when its cold out it takes forever to heat the cab. I was also displeased with Old Air because before I bought it I asked them if it would dehumidify heat and thier reply was yes. But a quick ride in the truck on a colder humid day (when the windows are all fogged up on the inside) would show the evap just wasn’t designed to do it.

I’ve fixed the one problem by moving to Ohio but there are still some hot days (enough to make a/c worth it) just nowhere near as many.

I grew up in Biloxi so I know what you mean about the gulf coast summers. The AC moves allot of air on high I don't think that would be a problem. I'll let you know about the defrost this winter. I now live in PA so heat was a concern so I put in heated seats just incase.

Wow! Looks great! It's funny, you and I must have similar tastes in trucks. I could count on one hand the differences in our builds. Same color, a/c, bbw, etc. Great work, and congrats on getting it done.

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

JGross, love your truck, I have decided on the Vintage Air Gen IV also but would like to see a shot looking in on the passenger side with the door open, just want to see how low the ac hangs down, the dimensions were 10.5" high but it looks like you had to space it down a little for clearance.

If you have a chance I would like to see a picture as indicated. thanks very much Kieth : gmc2:

how tall is that spacer 2" if so it would end up 12.5" from the bottom of the cab intake that runs across the truck. Does that sound about right?

How much glove box do you have left ?

I just noticed the round air vents on the outside of the cab, are those stock? I have room for a round vent on the passenger side of my gmc and for 2 round vents in the center of the dash, but will have to put a rectangular one on the drivers side as their is no room. Looks great. Kieth

When I was done I had no glove box left, under dash space goes fast. I had to fab a firewall box to give me some room behind the evap to make the connections but I just built it over the existing heater hole. In the finished photos the ducting in hanging down because I moved it to fix a wiring problem with the wiper motor it can be hidden better. Let me know if you need any measurements for your install

Here are some photos of the AC install;

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

JGross, thanks a lot, boy it is tight isn't it and all those hoses take up a lot of room. I can see how it will have to be done now, just have a few questions:

1. Where did you get the plate that filled in the square hole in the firewall ? Is it a std heater delete plate or something that vintage air provided.

2. Is the room behind the unit needed just to be able to connect the hoses, or is it because of the interferance with the unit itself and the doghouse (buldge for transmission) ?

3. If you gave up the vent on the passenger side being able to operate would the unit go any closer to the firewall ?

again thanks so much for the details and help, I just like to ask a lot of questions before spending the money.........If you know what I mean. Kieth

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

After driving for a year the 10MPG was killing me so I decided to do a 5.3L Vortec engine swap. I got an engine and trans out of a 2002 Silverado and after cleaning it up I dropped it into my 65 daily driver.

I have to thank the guys on the LSX swap forum for all the help they provided.

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

JGROSS,
Very nice work!
Two questions for ya:
I noticed you cut out a rectangle on the inner door panel. Yet, your doors hanging after paint don't seem to have that cut out area.

1. Why did you cut that area out?
2. And what happened to the hole?

It will be interesting to hear what kinda MPG you get with the new engine.

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay

A PO had cut holes in the inner door panels for speakers I just cut the round holes square to make them easier to repair

Re: Project 65 Daily Driver

Great! Makes sense and you did a nice repair.
How do you like your heat/AC system? What kind did you choose to install?
Was it complicated to install?
Sorry for all the questions. LOL!
