Well with the forecast you've been having this week, we're going to bring the canopy.

Man, you're not joking. Next weeks sounds like the same crap. With any luck all of this will be done by the week of good guys and we will miss some rain for a nice weekend.

Sounds like a good plan. Who has a good deal on a easy up type canopy?

I think we picked ours up from Wally World for $70-80. And you'll find a ton more uses for it over time; they come in quite handy.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
agreed. I have a metal frame one and can have it setup in 1 min flat if needed. I'll be bringing mine too, either to keep dry, or keep from frying in the sun.
So are we going to try and group together this year? If so, where? I like the road in front of the Pioneer Livestock Building, but would be game for where ever. http://www.iowastatefair.com/services/fair_map.pdf |

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
Levi, I'd come park by you guys, but I know how you feel about cross breeds and both of mine are. We will probabaly park where we did last year unless I can get a spot on a main road.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
I'm not sure where a good spot to park is as I haven't been to the grounds before. I figured we would arrive on Friday and scout out a possible spot for Saturday morning.
Anyone know what time you have to arrive to even get a "decent" spot on Saturday?

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
Well, I'm not sure because I haven't arrived before 9:30am on Saturday yet. But my friend Matt usually rolls in around 7-7:30 to get our spot and he always says there are a lot of cars waiting to get in then. I've heard 6-7am is prime time to get the optimal spot. But don't worry, there is always somewhere to park.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
I'm planning on being there earlier than last year because we have a booth in the varied industries building as well. This will be here real soon! We still have a lot to do as usual.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
Not last year (due to the rain), but the year before, I was there at 5am and there was a ****-ton of people already there. I'm planning to be there around 5am this year and wouldn't mind some company.
That even includes you Ryan, with your X-breeds It would make it a lot easier for me to hold spots if a couple people were to join me. We can park lengthwise (parallel to the road) until people show up, then park side by side as people show up. This worked well in the past. |

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
btw, the nice thing about this spot is a) it's close to food b) it's on the main road, so you see everything from the comfort of your chair c) restrooms are near d) shade in the morning, shade at night. not so much shade mid-day though, but that's what canopy's are for.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
Levi, do you know if they will have us come in the same jacked up way they had us come in last year? And is the same place you get in line to wait early in the am? I'm guessing so but not 100% on it.

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
not sure what you mean about the way you got in last year.
Where I go, and I assume everyone else, is the main parking lot by the dirt track. They zig zag the cars down the parking lanes. The first year I took the '69, at shortly after 5am, i was at the end of the first zig if that makes any sense. the second year, i got a bit smarter and had my son jump out of the truck with some chairs right when we entered to run down and grab the spot. That only kinda worked since they have a "no place holding" rule until 10am. Not saying there aren't better spots than this, but this area seems to work well for us. Last year we couldn't get it and ended up way out there on the south side of the grounds. |

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
and honestly, if I camp at the grounds, I may go put the '50 "in line" and walk back to the campgrounds.
but again, more people doing the same would be ideal. man, now i'm all excited about GG's |

Re: Des Moines Good-Guys (July 2-4)
Is anyone going to be there Friday afternoon/evening?
I just realized that the show last until 8pm Saturday night... at KS everything ends at like 5 IIRC.
