Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

so, might not have gotten the greatest deal afterall...

I cleaned the engine up tonight and found the casting number and engine VIN

casting # 3999289

Engine VIN T1025TRB

This block is a 454

Now, there is no partial vehicle VIN stamped near the engine VIN. Could this be a warranty replacement block?

And if so, did they usually replace the engines with what was current, or did they replace with year correct blocks?

I read somewhere that sometimes blocks with this casting number were actually bored for 402ci...

I'll know more tomorrow when I pull a valve cover and get the head casting numbers.

I'm a little disappointed, but what the hell, it's still a big block

I'm just south of Ridgedale now, and grew up in the Glen Lake area of Minnetonka (Hopkins Schools)

I wish I had a big lake in my back yard!

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

I doubt it is a warranty block. Still a 454 however. Does it run and drive yet?

Not running and driving yet...dang, I've only had it for 30 hours

I'll get it going this week hopefully. Stay tuned!

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

So, got the head numbers today and found that they are different castings:

353049 1-18-72

and

3993820 F-10-71

Is it odd to have two different casting number heads on one block?

It is very likely that one of those heads has been replaced. Look at the difference in casting dates - over 7 months.

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Does it matter for the engine if the castings are different?? I read that those two castings numbers are similar designs, similar CC's, etc... It's fine to run them together isn't it?

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Got it running! sort of... It'll run if I dump gas in the carb, but it won't run on it's own fuel supply. I probably have to fiddle with the carb and fuel lines...must not have cleaned all the crap out of it.

I'll have more time tomorrow night to try it again.

Combustion chamber volume is the most important match, but you want the valves and ports to be similar too.

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

It's alive! I had to replace most of the rubber fuel lines, fuel pump, and rebuilt the carb. now she purrs like a kitten nothing sounds wrong with the motor except a giant exhaust leak which I will fix tomorrow.

I think I did pretty good with this purchase...the trans even shifts smoothly

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Congratulations on bringing it back to life. I'm glad someone made the road trip up north to get it. I would have went to look at it, but I still have a truck at Sharpies place in Wyoming I have to pick up.

Thanks! I love my Crew Cab 6 years old and nearly 80K miles on it and the only thing that stinks is the hydroboost unit leaks. I LOVE the diesel...towing that truck back home I got 16.5 mpg

side note- we had two 88-98 C/K's make it to 300K miles...and I plan on driving this one forever. great trucks!

how much of a hand did you have in engineering those bad boys?

For GMT400 I was in driveline development and later brake development.

I did the engine air induction system for the GMT800's.

After that I moved into engineering program management, and did the GMT820D and GMT820C (the Denali and Escalade), the 2003 pickup midcycle, then the H2 and now the Volt.

That's pretty cool Keith. Thanks for helping develop two of the BEST series of trucks ever made!

And, the small block 400 was never offered in the pre-'73 trucks, true?

I ask because I might buy this truck below (for the motor and tranny, and onl y if I can get it cheaper) and can't quite make out the size of the motor in the pic, and I think it is a '72, not a '70:

if I'm not correct please correct me... the 8/400 was a 396ci bored out .30 over which made it a 402. That's why all 3 tags read differently 396 400 and 402. I think I'm partially right...

Re: 8-400 badge...what exactly does it mean?

Feel free to correct, but there's no rhyme or reason for it. They did this to confuse the enthusiasts.

The SPID reads 400 CI. but it's 402 CI.

The emissions sticker reads 402 CI.

They probably figured 400 badges look cooler. I can't really say they were wrong.

The owners manual calls it a 400 engine and 402 piston displacement.

A 396 SPID may actually have a 402 engine, yikes, I mean displacement. The same may apply for a 396 badge.

Can't speak for how much a 402 is punched out, but I can say it doesn't mean more HP. While I can't speak for years, the heads on at least some 396 engines had larger ports than at least some 402 engines. 10.1 compression versus 8.5/1. That's how I remember it anyway.
