Re: High Mileage Turbo 350 Filter Change.

I never heard about this before.Maybe in some other make of vehicle.I have heard that overdrives go out faster if they are driven under 65 mph alot.

Re: High Mileage Turbo 350 Filter Change.

the reason OD's go out faster under 65 is ppl put them in od and drive around town in them stop and go never getting to highway speeds and such, I ALWAYS heard it was bad to do that, not sure how true it is but I always heard to drive around town in drive and not overdrive.

It is true, but it also depends on your trans. This happened to my dad's 91 with a 700R4. The reason they wear out is the transmission constantly hunts between 3rd and overdrive if your speed fluctuates between 40 and 55 mph. That constant in and out causes a lot of wear on your OD. You are better off keeping it in D until you hit highway speeds.

Re: High Mileage Turbo 350 Filter Change.

...WHEN dropping the trans. pan, will I need to remove the entire ATF before pouring in new trans fluid? I just want to fix the leak caused by the RTV on the pan and replace it with a rubber gasket and change the filter. Will it hurt the transmission if I do it that way (Just refill the trans. with new ATF that is mixed with the previous ATF). The PO I believe put Dot 3, BUT I'm just adding ATF DexMerc, which meets Dot 3 specs as well. PLEASE let me know if this will be fine? I will be doing this after work today. [sigh]

Ummm, DOT 3 is brake fluid. If you just replace the ATF that you drain out with new DexMerc ATF you will be fine.

...DONE! Thank you.

BTW, when checking for ATF level w/ the dipstick, it is on full (near the top line mark) when it has not been turned on. When it's running and on idle, it's on the minimum mark (asking that it needs 1 quart more). What gives?? LOL

Re: High Mileage Turbo 350 Filter Change.

Don't bother checking your transmission fluid with the truck NOT running and cold. The ONLY way to check it is at normal operating temp (you want that fluid hot), and the engine running. Whenever I get the itch to check it I drive it around for a while, then go somewhere where I know I'm on level ground, shift through all the gears, then put it in park, and while the engine is running check the fluid. It should be up to the hot full mark. If it's not add just enough to reach the line. Not more.

Re: High Mileage Turbo 350 Filter Change.

i have a high millage transmission half million miles on original transmission last fluid change was about 120000miles before i got it, in my volvo the fluid was black almost looked like the stuff that comes out of diesel engine.

i changed the oil and filter, never shifted better and i have put 30000miles on it. we do this on a regular bases at the shop im at and never had a problem

A tired warrior of the 1980s in a world of low profile tires, front wheel drive, and plastic bumpers, where people stay in their houses until snowplows move the offending substance from their paths, too helpless to travel without AAA and chains and salt, clearing their windows with longhandled brushes while gently stepping around in the snow trying to stay nice and dry.
