Re: Need more leg room . please help
Dont know, never had the stock seat in the truck. Just some cheezy VW bench seats that came with it.
The bottom is bumped up agains the back skirt around the gas tank. Keep in mind its not just cutting the bottoms off, you still need to bolt or weld something on the legs to attach them to the floor.... |

Re: Need more leg room . please help
Does anybody have a pic of a full size bench in an AD. Seems like it would be too wide, I can get one out of a 97 for free. I just didn't think it would fit. This may work out good.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
Here you go, 1988 Chevy fullsize bench in my 1949 Chevy truck. To get it in there I cut out the factory seat riser but NOT the brace that was in front of the original gas tank. That brace is important and should not be cut, besides it isn't necessary for the 1988 bench. I used the original 1988 seat risers, with no modifications. They sit on the flat parts of the floor, and I drilled 4 holes and bolted it down. Reinforcement is a good idea on the bottom to spread the load should you get in an accident. This is one of the easiest mod's I've done.
I love this seat, I put many, many hours in the one in my 90 Chevy and it was always comfortable.

It's a real good fit, close to the doors but never touches.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
We used a set out of a 98 Honda and made a Base for it to sit on. Also I am 6 foot 6 almost 300lbs. and almost sit in it comfortably. Also put a center seat in from a 2002 cadi that flips up to make room for 3 or me and two really small people. Although its not a bench seat from a truck or van we made it work.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
You do not need a compressor. Locate the spot welds and drill them out or use a cut-off wheel on a grinder and trim it out. Wear safety equipment.

I removed my seat riser by cutting the hulk of it out with the plasma cutter, then drilling out the spot welds.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
Those bolts seats directly to the sheet metal floor, are you just using fender washers on the underside?
My pieces I'm welding to the bottom of the seat supports are 1/4" thick x 1.5 They will run the full length of the seat supports. Probably use 3 3/8" bolts per side. Still may run full straps under the cab as well, instead of just fender washers. |

Re: Need more leg room . please help
Understood makes sense .I assume if I a willing to have the seat in more of an upright position .I could push it back further .

Re: Need more leg room . please help
My seat is as far back as the cab will allow. The top of the seat back can't quite go back all the way because the corners of the seat back hit the rounded corners of the cab, but it's really close. I positioned the seat on the sliders all the way back, with the seat back as far as it would go. Then I drilled the holes and mounted it. That way, if my wife who is shorter wants to drive it or my kids some day, the seat can be slid forward quite a bit.
Right now I've just got big washers on the bottom side of the seat, but when I sandblast the bottom of the cab I'll weld on some plates like new vehicles have, to anchor the seat better.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
I don't know. I just measured, and it's approximately 10" from the floor to the "butt area" of the seat. I assume this is lower than stock.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
At 6'5" 250 I had the same problem. I removed the tank and mounted one in the rear frame rails then installed bucket seats from a full size Chevy. It made a big difference.

Re: Need more leg room . please help
The stock seat in my 51 1-1/2 ton is 12 inches high at the front
I've had a lot of seats in my 48 since I chopped it and found that a guy has to be real careful about the seat backs of the seats he tries to put in there. Most high back seats lean back too far and take up way too much room. On the 88---- seats, if they sit too high a guy could pretty easily section the base by cutting a strip out of it an welding it back together a bit lower. Even if you can't weld or don't have a welder you could trim it down and take the pieces to someone to weld it back together. |
