Seems we have a different interpretation of "a mirror".

Crappit! I just shaved my doors not too long ago!

I wonder if 'peep mirrors' are legal...

Oh and one more thing. If you have limo tint on the back glass and no side mirrors I'm pretty sure that is illegal. 'dont know if you do just thought I'd throw that in while we're on the topic.'

Laterz!

Re: Texas people enter please

I've been told limo tint is illegal. Is that just on the front and side windows? Or is that referring just to the silver reflective tint. I have a buddy that got pulled over and the cop took a razor blade and took a square of tint off the middle of the window when he gave him a ticket for it.

PS Hi from McKinney, TX sorry I don't know the answer but I think he's right when he said two mirrors in any configuration are required (rearview and ether side or two side mirrors)

Re: Texas people enter please

tint is supposed to be 35% tops on the side windows and up to 20% on the back, this is what i was told by the tint shop when I tinted my Hyundai.

For tint the law is as follows from Section 547.613 of the Texas Transportation Code

WindshieldSunscreening devices cannot be applied to the windshield unless the conditions below are met.

Sunscreening devices must be applied above the AS-1 line. If there is no AS-1 line, sunscreening devices must end five inches below the top of the windshield. If the AS-1 line is less than five inches from the top of the windshield, it will mark the end of the permissible area. If the AS-1 line is more than five inches from the top pf the windshield the five inch measurement will mark the end of the permissible area.
Sunscreening devices may not be red, amber, or blue in color.

Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a light transmittance value of 25% or more.

Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a luminous reflectance value of 25% or less.

Side Windows to The Right and Left of The DriverSunscreening devices can be applied to the side windows to the right and left of the driver if the following conditions are met.

Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, have a light transmittance value of 25% or more.
Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, have a luminous reflectance value of 25% or less.

Side Windows to The Rear of The Driver (Revised September 1, 2009)
These windows are completely exempted from regulation under the Texas Transportation Code. Reference Legislation: Senate Bill 589 (PDF)

Rear WindowA sunscreening device can be applied to the rear window of the vehicle if the following conditions are met.

If a motor vehicle is equipped with an outside mirror on each side of the vehicle that reflects to the vehicle operator a view of the roadway for a distance of at least 200 feet from the rear of the vehicle then there are no restrictions regarding the sunscreening devices applied to the rear window.

If a motor vehicle is not equipped with such mirrors then the rear window must meet the following standards:
Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a light transmittance value of 25% or more.
Sunscreening devices, when measured in combination with the original glass, must have a luminous reflectance value of 25% or less.

Re: Texas people enter please

I am and have been a state inspector for the last 20yrs.I had a 77 swb step that was shaved with just a rear view.It passes state inspection requirements.I had a similar issue with a local cop.He told me that he was going to issue a ticket for lack of side mirrors.I asked him if it passed state inspection requirements if that would cancel my ticket. He said if it will pass,I could get the ticket dismissed.I pulled my inspectors license and told him it passes.I didn't get a ticket. At the timeThe truck was obnoxious with a 383 ,3" flows and turndowns. It may just be a case of harassing the guy in the hot rod.Take your ticket with a picture of your truck and the inspection code and you should get it dismissed.
Good Luck,Dan

Re: Texas people enter please

I like where my thread has went, would totally be down for a meet!

But to answer a few things stated, no I wasn't ticketed for anything else besides the mirrors, broke no other law as im sure he would have mentioned it. I have no tint on my truck, rear view mirror is fairly new and in great condition. Im 22 so like allengator mentioned so he probably saw a young guy in a suspicious truck and I guess thought he'd mess with me. I have been on the phone being transferred and given numbers to all different places to try and sort this out. I'm going to give the phone numbers a few more tries tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work im going to see what my inspector says.

Thanks for the help guys, its cool to see so many people from texas here.

Inspection/Rejection Criteria

20.19 Mirror. Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such motor vehicle.

1. Inspection Procedure

a. Inspect only one mirror.

1) Exterior Rearview Mirror: From the driver’s position, visually inspect exterior mirror for a clear and reasonably unobstructed view to the rear. Look for correct location and stable mounting.

2) Interior Rearview Mirror: From the driver’s position, visually inspect interior mirror for proper mounting, location, cracks, sharp edges, and ease of adjustment.

2. Inspect for and reject if:

a. Mirror does not provide the driver with a clear view to the rear of 200 feet.

b. Vehicle is not equipped with at least one mirror.

c. Mirror offers unsafe interference with driver’s forward vision.

d. Reflective surface of mirror is cracked, broken, peeled, tarnished, or has sharp edges.

e. Mirror is not mounted securely to prevent swing or excessive vibration unless the vehicle is equipped with another mirror which meets requirements.

NOTE: An inside mirror would meet all the above requirements. If the vehicle is equipped with more than one mirror, only one, either inside or outside, needs to meet all requirements.

Exactly what are you basing the need for two mirrors on . I seem to read that only one will do the job of satisfying the law as written. I am interested in knowing why two are required . Is there a different law to the requirement of a mirror or mirrors? The note above states that one mirror would cover all requirements.

Re: Texas people enter please

I'm interested to see how this plays out. I have been working on my '73's bodywork but had to drive it into town for its inspection. Although I do have a rear-view mirror on the windshield I specifically put my driver's side mirror back on so it would pass. Maybe i didn't need it but my dad told me for years it wouldn't pass without it. Please keep us posted!

Re: Texas people enter please

If you pass and recieve a Texas state inspection sticker, then your vehicle is legal to operate on Texas roads and highways. This of course is without any changes after it passes.

I'm with the majority on this one, only one mirror is required. I personally asked my local inspection guy that question before I brought my truck in, so if need be, I could mount a door mirror to pass inspection. He told me that the rearview mirror was fine as long as it met the required criteria.

I'm sure there are certain circumstances that will change this, like towing or carring a load that blocks your ability to see the required distance. Maybe dark tint that impedes the officers abilty to see your mirror and so on. I think this just boils down to the police officer. It's up to his discretion to pull you over if he feels there is a valid reason for it, and i'm sure in may cases it gives them "a reason" to pull you over.

Inspection is for one mirror, however the laws states two mirrors. One internal and one external. Law is written to confuse you!

Are there no law Texas enforcement officers on this site??

It is the TX Dept of Safety that writes the vehicle inspection criteria. And they are supposed to be based on the laws that our state legislature passes. If there is a discrepancy, and that is certainly possible, then any ticket issued as a result of that discrepancy could be contested in court.

Please quote the section of law to which you refer.
I can find no such law.

Re: Texas people enter please

I chimed on the last thread about this.
former inspector myself.
and driver of a shaved truck w/ no mirrors for the past 8 years...
in my experience: a vehicle can have 18 mirrors, but the law says to only inspect one that has a clear view of 200 feet.
**
el paso- you are in mountain time and practically new mexico!
**
g chemist- I respect your posts and your truck, but the law begs to differ with your 2 mirrors theory. I'de like to see your info- cause if you are right, I'm illegal...

TX meeting? Hell to the yes! I'll have to break out the primer gun for a fresh coat if I'm gonna have to mingle amongst the shiny!
