i agree with both....i think the wheel (big or smaller) has to fit the look/style of the vehicle and suspension setup....i think the biggest rear size that looks good on a lowered 2wd truck is 22", & i think 20" max for the front....i think most bigger rims look good on customs, although it can vary....most "original" looking rides look better with a 15-17"....but i like the idea of having a set of both smaller & larger wheels...then you can run two totally different looks to fit your mood |

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
I generally like things that look purposeful. Even back in the 60s, big 16 dragster wheels looked cool on the back because they were needed to mount the biggest of slicks. I can appreciate the need for big wheels if they are required to clear or cool massively oversized brakes like on a Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari, or late model Corvette. But seeing 20 and bigger wheels bolted to stock drum or disc brakes looks as out of place to me as whitewall tires on an airplane. From a styling standpoint huge wheels can also make the brakes look tiny if they havent been upgraded along with the wheels.
I suppose the engineering aspect is part of what bothers me most about excessively large wheels, as some of the wheels look a little scary from a strength standpoint. A big rig with wheels this large mount with a bolt pattern close to 11. Seeing wheels this large attached to a car or truck with a bolt pattern less than half this size makes some of the spoke designs look very vulnerable to breakage. Years ago I spent a lot of time in wrecking yards. Steel wheels involved in a smash up invariably crushed and crimped tighter to the tire. It may go flat, but virtually never separated from the vehicle unless part of the suspension was torn away. By comparison, there were a lot of cars in the wrecking yards with the remains of early Cragar and Astro mags still bolted to the car, but with the rim/tire broken off and missing. It was apparent that aftermarket cast aluminum spoke wheels could be sheared off in a crash, perhaps even causing the wreck. And these were 14 & 15 wheels. With very little in the way of certification standards for aftermarket wheels, it seems reasonable to presume a 20+ wheel held on with a 5 bolt circle could very easily be damaged just bumping into a curb or smashing into a pot hole. |

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
um... their lame. and to the guy who said he was in the middle with 22's. yea, those are too big to mount semi truck tires. so you don't get to be in the middle anymore.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
Anything over 20" looks stupid. I had 18" and 20" Intro's on my Belair, and it looked great. I had the right size tires and it sat just right. There is a right way and a wrong way. Wrong way looks stupid just like 24' s or bigger.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
U asked for opinions so heres mine. I can only speak for myself, I like big wheels. I have 24's on my tahoe and plan on running 22's on my c10. Don't get me wrong, 15's on a slammed c10 look good to me too, but it's Every-man to their own. I build my vehicles how I want them, not to please anyone else or to follow a crowd. I also plan on building a c10 with stock trim and steelies one day so I like them all I guess.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
I agree with you. Do what you want, and don't worry about pleasing others or keeping up with trends.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
Here are a couple pics of Chevys that I think look good with the wheels they have on. In this order 24's 15's 28's 28's. SO Let the arguments begin!!!

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
I like both. The pics above all look good, but the only truck that can be driven is the one wearing 15's. The rest would would need rim repairs after a night out of cruising pot holes and railroad tracks.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
Sure, big diameter wheels will ruin a classic GM truck . . ....
Here are 2 similar trucks w/drastically different rolling stock combinations. It's not about the parts you use, it's how you put it all together!

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
I like trucks both ways if done tastefully. I like simple wheel designs. Any of the larger diameter wheels with too many rivets and/or spokes and any other gaudy bling stuff ruins the look of whatever they are on, imho. I used to like 15" tires on my trucks due to them being cheaper and easier to find but that doesn't seem to be the case as much anymore.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
You guys are all right, it's a matter of taste. I like anything custom, if it looks good.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
Remember that 35, 45, 50, 55, 60 tires will fill your wheel wells different.

Re: Thoughts & opinions on big rims ?
I love them all and thats why I'm having trouble deciding on the new project.
I'm thinking the 15" are gonna win over the 20's on this one.
