Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

Thanks for the great info. I do drive Betsy slower than my daily driver, that particular light just turned from yellow to red really fast. I will have the brake system checked out, thanks again!

Hows the tread on your tires? That affects traction too.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

happened to me when i first bought my truck. although she didn't do a 180, it was taking a real longtime to stop and I would have to stand on the brake pedal with both feet. she would lock up in the rear and slide to the right a bit. the two best things I did was to change my driving habbits and I installed a brakebooster.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

If the truck did a 180, you are doing something wrong. There's no question here.

When the back end locks up and starts sliding, get off the brakes.
Steer into the skid. That means if the back end is going right, turn the wheel a bit to the right.

You may or may not have a brake problem, but you certainly didn't control the truck.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

All empty trucks are light in the rear, add old brake technology and stiff springs to that! You need to totally change your driving habits with these trucks, especially in areas with traffic, lights, sharp corners with bumps, etc

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

'68, no I wasn't texting! I drive Betsy much different from my daily driver. She doesn't even have a radio yet, so nothing to distract me.

Thanks again for the info.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

Whenever I come up to a light that I don't think I can stop in time for, I don't even hesitate, slam on the go fast pedal and get out of there in a hurry. I am not saying to run a red, but if you are in the intersection before the light goes red you are safe, at least in Ca.

?? Not sure do you have any pics. If your truck has a brake booster it will be the large round THING that is up against the firewall, if not you will just have the master cylinder and no large round THING.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

When I bought my 72, bringing her home, some yahoo did a panic stop for what appeared to be no reason at all. I locked er up and did a 180. Found out my rear brakes were not working, rear wheel cylinders were bad.

HTH..good luck...don t. ....

Power brakes were standard from `71 up? My `72 has front disk and rear drums but they are not power assisted. Is this something that a PO might have taken out, for some strange reason? Brakes work fine for me, I keep my distance and look far ahead so it’s not an issue for me.

Re: Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

Sorry for the late response. I guess I do have the brake booster.
