Got the fenders, and cowl pieces back from the sand blaster today. Didn't have much time so I started with the easiest piece. Cut a patch out of what was left from the fender patch panels.


Didn't do much planning first, what do people do for an antenna after they plug the hole? Can I just hide the original under the hood? or do they make a special antenna? or am I just outta luck?

Had a little more time tonight. So I started on a fender. This seems to be a common problem. All 4 fenders I have are worn from the front bumper in the same way. This one was the worst though.


Not perfect, but a thin coat of filler, and nobody else will know.


Went ahead and painted the inside of the fender braces with POR15 while I could still get to them. I put a hole in the bottom of the braces to let water & mud run out next time. I don't know what GM was thinking when they designed this.


I got one emblem hole welded up too. Now you see it.


Now you don't.

All I wanted to do today was work on the truck... Yea right. Got up, and the house was freezing. Yup, the oil furnace was out of oil, and you can't get any delivered on a weekend. So it was off to the gas station for 25 gallons of diesel. Then since I had the company pickup I hauled a load of garbage off. Oh yea, why I had the company truck... The throttle linkage in my Corvair broke yesterday at lunch, so I left it at work, and drove the truck home. So I went back to the shop, and fixed the car. Turnes out the mount for part of the linkage had rusted off. Anyhow got it fixed, and by 4:00 I got out to the shop. First thing I did was break my last cutoff wheel, so... off to the store to get some... Finally got all the welding done on the fenders. So tomorrow I get to shoot the DP90 on everything.

I hate it when I have days like that. Better luck tomorrow.......DP90 huh? Have you ever tried the NCP275? I don't use either anymore, but I had switched to the NCP from the DP series. The NCP doesn't have the isocyanyde and one other chemicle in it. I've found a less expensive epoxy primer that is just as good if not better. It's made by Northstar.

Are you tigging those patches in?

There are soo many different brands and part numbers of primers, I get overwhelmed trying to figure it all out. I've never used the NCP275 before, just the DP for bare metal primer & sealer. I read a lot about SPI epoxy primer & clear, but they don't have a rep in the area. If I felt more confident about what I was doing, I might order some and try it. But I just went with what the local paint guy recomended. He didn't try to sell me the top of the line on everything, and he sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so I'm trusting his judgment this time. I'll have to check the Northstar brand, maybe there is a rep here in town.

All the panels are TIG welded. I just love how nice & slow I can go with it. I always feel like I'm in a race with the MIG... squeeze & go as fast as I can so it doesn't burn a hole. With the TIG I can melt a drop of filler rod, then heat it up a bit, and flow it into a nice spot weld. So much easier.

Got everything bondo'd...

Hey like the thread....your doing great...I have my 1969 Z/28 camaro that i bought in pieces when i was in high school....it's getting done again as we speak and this will make the third time around for it. Every time i sit in that seat i lose 40 lbs and 20 yrs....lol. As for more then 1 project at a time, well it happens.....I so get that too..nice meeting you. I will be back to keep a eye on your progress you doing great work over there

Here is their website. The company is actually Lusid Technologies in Salt Lake City, and one of their brands is Northstar. A friend of mine that does high end body and paint prefers their epoxy primer over other brands. Lusid's chemist told him that the Northstar EP210 epoxy primer was originally designed for use on submarines. So it should be some good stuff. I know I like using it, and it's less $$ than PPG. I've used their polyurethane's as well with good results.

Love the holidays.. what was this one anyhow, mattress sale day?
I got an early start. Went out and turned on both propane heaters, then went and had a cup of coffee while the shop warmed up. Got everything primered with Slick Sand.


Even got part of the boys Quarter Midget primed.


After lunch I sanded most of it back off.


Last pic... of work Looks just like this morning, everything in a fresh coat of Slick Sand... DOH !!!


Time to sit back and watch the paint dry.

Well, got some paint on the fenders


and cowls. Finally... I had two propane heaters, two electric heaters, and every halogen light I could find. Still not really warm enough. I think the weather is trying to tell me to take the cab apart next. Maybe by the time I get it stripped it will be warm enough to paint again.

Hey, Nice job on the fenders and cowl peices. I want to paint my truck in peices like your doing but im worried about the peices not matching when im done. I guess it depends on what color and making sure you use the same amount of coats on each panel plus buying all the paint at the same time. Are you just painting them in your shop or outside? Are you using single stage paint or base coat clear coat?

I think the biggest influence is whether the paint your using is metalic or not. I chose a non metalic so it should match panel to panel. If it were metalic I wouldn't attempt it, I have seen guys that could, but I'm not one of them. I do hope I got enough paint, as that would probably be more noticable.
It's Omni (PPG's cheap line) base coat clear coat.
Your truck is lookin good. Wish you were closer, I would like that long bed.

I have used the nason brand before, I think thats about the same as the omni. thats what I think im going to do also. My neighbor bought a new jeep last year and I love the bright red on it. Think im going to get the paint code off it and paint mine that color, its a solid color also. Im in th process of tearing the floor out of that long bed to get the floor braces I need for my short bed. I wish I could find someone to buy those bed sides, I would let them go real cheap.

Time for a little update. It's been too cold to paint, so... I got comfortable in the basement with my sewing machine, and made a new seat cover. White vinyl with blue cloth inserts. I have enough of each left over to cover the metal door panels too.

The seat is all done. The weather is warming up, so I'm back to painting. After looking at the front fenders, they needed redone. There were a couple of noticable flaws in each. So right now I'm sanding them a bit, and getting ready to shoot them again.

The weather has sucked latley, I need to put a roof on my shed, but it keeps raining. At least it forced me to work on the truck again. Figured it was time to get the cab done, so I can start putting all these pretty parts on something.

I started with the back since it was looking right at me.


Picked up something to keep me busy for a while, cab corners, and floor patches. Shoulda got some rocker panels too..


The drivers cab corner isn't too bad.


Now it is


That looks better.


All shiny again.


Passengers side looked about the same, but I forgot to get a before pic.


All patched up.


And finally coated with Epoxy.


Next I think I'll do the rockers. Any tips on doing them? I am half tempted to leave the cab sitting like it is, on the firewall. It would make getting to the spot welds really easy. I'm just afraid of the thing distorting when I cut the rocker off.

Put in a few more hours this weekend. Had to strip the inside of the cab.

First we tipped the cab up on its side so I could strip the roof.


Shiny...


Then I did the dash. There's lots of little nooks and crannies to get into.


Treated with Zinc wash, and epoxy primer.


Time to start fixing rust. The rockers, part of the floor, and the kick panels were rusty.
First step was get the rusted parts off.


Cut the rusted floor out.


Treated all of the bare metal, then painted it with POR15.


Just overlapped the floor patch, and welded it on top of the good metal.


Got the rocker on, and spot welded solid.


Now on to the other side....

That looks good, I know how it feels to be putting metal back in after cutting and grinding and cleaning rust, just be sure to seal that overlap joint really well or you will have rust in a few years !!
