Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Well I got a lot of stuff done today I was going to tackle the front fender and just do a patch panel , but it was just too bad up front . so I robbed the new one I had for truck #1 ,again...and the bolts ....... I geased the front end , found the bolt that tightens the rag joint to the steering box was never tightened, and would not start into the threads.... took it for a ride , then changed the carb , and it still runs crappy.. so if it is in the 60's again like it was today I tackle the ignition...oh also put the seat from truck #1 in it , much better...........

There is SOME neat stuff in the Silver Book, but it really depends on what turns your crank! I mean who really cares about Garbage Truck Bodies.
The Custom Accessories Book as well as the Accessories installation Manual makes me happy most of the time! Then again any literature is easy on the eyes.

Nice grill by the way!

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Well today I concentrated on getting this truck to run right, today ,and yesterday, and the day before that ..... the single biggest improvement was to swap out the autolite plugs for a set of accells I had sitting around ,I wonder if the autolites were fouled or the gap was too big , but anyways it almost runs what I would call fair now .. Without knowing if the PO installed a performance cam and if it is degreed in properly (or off a tooth) I guess there is not much I can do other than get some miles on it ... I did work on the speedo , and after lubing the cable the speedo stuck all the way to the right .. so pull the dash out again , remove speedo , spray with wd40 and then used my drill and a tap in the drill backwards to turn it and it works perfectly .. now I just need a new cable and I think I will be jammin....

Where are you sourcing your fenders - the fit looks pretty good in your picture. I need to get a set before too long....

Red face Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Well I compared the 2 fenders and I cant say as to if there is any difference between them ... I guess the real test will be to test install them and see what it looks like ...
By the way i thought I would sit down and figure what I have into this rig so if I had to sell it I would not lose my shirt ..
Of the things that were on hand / free ,gauge cluster , seat ,heater ducting/valve , HEI ,650 holley carb ,shifter and tunnel, temp gauge, ebrake handle ....
Of the things I have bought , a pair of fenders, apair of inner rocker extensions, spark plugs, lower rear fender mounts, speedo cable , dome light, choke cable ,fender seals, brake pedal pad, glove box and glovebox door, heater duct , heater control levers, rear bed post ,misc paint of interior of cab ...for a grand total of 2051.00 Suddenly I don't feel so well...

If you're worried about losing your shirt you have picked the wrong hobby. I don't think most of us are in this to make money but the joy of having these trucks and making them our own statement.

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Well I finally got around to working on posting pictures. , fixed the handle on the ashtray , installed the glove box after robbing hdwe off truck #1 .... Today I replaced the alternator with one from , you guessed it ,truck #1 it has the internal regulator ,the other one didnt line up with the pulleys at all , this one is off just a bit ,but it is fine to drive .. took it out for a 10 mile drive , longest run yet ,went well but the speedo is acting up so I get to scratch my new paint job ....That cluster comes out kind of dry... here is what it looked like

and this is what it looks like now

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Driving it every chance I get !!!!!! It does need a bigger radiator ,I took it on its first 70 mph trip for 10 miles and the temp gauge rose up to a point it had not yet been .. When I popped the hood it was not holding pressure and you could hear the coolant boiling around the thermostat.. it my just need to build some pressure and it will be fine ..Of course it lacks a good shroud .. .

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

Check your rad cap and also the spring in the lower hose. If you dont have good pressure in the system, the water pump can suck the lower hose flat and you wont get good flow thru the system.

Truck is looking good too!!

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

It appears to be a small pinhole in the upper tank, I do need to find a shroud if anyone has one lying around ... I think the rad is for a 6 .. I just priced one and they are 212 .00 local..

Re: Guess what followed me home from Illinois?

You can do what I did - buy a $139 universal aluminum one from speedway and make your own shroud out of 20ga sheetmetal.
