Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Yeah Lime-away is another form of CLR in a gel for toilet bowls...which I prefer the gel bcus you can apply it directly to the problem areas....I dont know about waxing it yet tho...

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

I believe the idea is then to clear it, not wax it. Don't know how long it will last. This is what I've been planning to do to my '47 once I get all the mechanical stuff done, while the pocket book recovers.

the idea is to remove the rust.
waxing it would hold back the elements... just not for a long time.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Loving this thread so far! Anyone just happen to know if the red or green scotchbright pads are more "coarse"? I have a ton of red but no green.

What method did you use? CLR and a green scotch brite?

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Yep. Poured CLR into a bucket and diluted with water. Used a green scotch brite and used medium pressure. It leaves the surface surpassingly smooth, no scatches.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

What a great tip.
I have been used white vinegar to clean rust off of small parts. Soak the rusted parts in a jar of vinegar for a week or so and the rust either disolves or is easily wire brushed off.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

I just picked up my CLR to try this out in the next couple weeks. Unfortuantly, this is my before... Fraid its going to take a bit more then CLR! But why not see what the CLR will do first right?

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

CLR Results. I cant say that it is a miracle cure for rust but it does seem to work pretty good! Im sure alot of it had to do with the scotch brite pad i was using but none the less. It took my roof from full on focked to manageable in less then an hour. Worth it to me!

Before and after shots.

This right here was seriously two minutes of scrobbing, tops!

I also have a video uploading on youtube but its fighting back.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Very interesting, I was told the stuff they sell at Harbor Freight works great too. Its called, Evapo-Rust. I will buy some and give it a shot. Someone was asking about red scotchbrite pads? They are about the same as the green ones they sell in stores, very rough.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

I tried the CLR today and I wont use it again. It only seemed to work on the very light surface rust and I had to rub hard to make it work. I will post a picture of what I use tomorrow after work.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Okay, I had to find it. I use a 6" cup brush made of nylon filament like this:Dominion TNBC Nylon Cup Brush, Nylon Cup Brush... Dominion TNBC Nylon Cup Brush, Nylon Cup Brush... I currently am redoing someone else hack job right now and these work great for stripping layers of paint of if you take your time. They also take the light rust off faster than the messy clr.

Re: how to CLEAN rust off

Has anyone done this with the CLR and green scrubby... and then clear coated? Curious if the rust came back under the clear coat... I wouldn't think it would come back as the clear coat would lock out the O2...
