Re: Cross Country Trip....
The old girl will make it, its a chevy. When I bought my suburban I flew into Phoenix , got a ride to Flagstaff, bought the truck and drove it non stop to Vancouver BC. It never even had a spare tire but it never let me down once.

Re: Cross Country Trip....
I don't think you'll have any problems if you've made it this far. I do auto transports so if you have a problem i could pick you up and i live in phx. (pm'ed my number)Make sure you keep a couple gallons of water with you when you get into west tx till you get to az. If you do break down there are alot of long scretches with nothing out there.

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Day 3
We started out the morning early. Got a ways down the road and ran into this thing. I dunno what it is, but those folks in Louisianan sure do like steep bridges. A bit further down the road and we're in good ol' Texas. The first thing I noticed is that Texans really like cowboys. It seemed like every sign I saw was proclaiming its product was either made for or by cowboys, or made to make you look like a cowboy. Also, apparently "jack in the box" and Whataburger are hot commodities, as there's one on every corner. I used to love Whataburger as a little kid, but they shut down all the ones in Florida a few years back. I stopped at this one for the sake of nostalgia and soon I remembered why they all closed down...they suck. Everything went pretty smooth through Houston, although it was getting pretty warm by that point. Houston reminded me of a slightly larger version of Tampa; If everything wouldn't have had "COWBOY!" stamped across it I would've thought I was back home... Things didn't go to well once we hit San Antonio. I missed an exit that I think was supposed to have bypassed the down town area so I ended up going through the heart of that huge place right around rush hour. By that time the temps were at 101 and with all the traffic and the heat from the truck the cab conditions were brutal. It took us a long time to make it out of there and I was starting to worry about the truck overheating. So far its been staying pretty steady at 205-210F, and as we trekked through San An. it peaked at 220F, which wasn't to bad considering. Fred, on the other hand, did not fair as well. I've been trying to keep him soaked down and well hydrated, but he's definitely an indoor dog and it shows...I noticed he was starting to get restless as I was trying to get through down town. I offered him some water out of a cup while I was driving but he wouldn't take it, which I knew was a bad sign. As we made it out of the city I found somewhere to get him out and I dowsed him in ice water from our cooler. He was acting like he was disoriented as I soaked him down, so we took a rest for a bit after that. Poor fella just isn't cut out for this kind of weather... he's gonna think we landed in hell once we get to phoenix. After all of that we got out as far as a place called Junction and called it a day. In total we hit almost 550 miles today, which isn't bad. I was hoping for some good Texas BBQ, and when we got to Junction I came across a place called Coopers. Unfortunately their cooking isn't as good as their clever slogan suggested... I walked in humming Guy Clark... ...and walked out singing the blues. Too bad, I was really interested to see how real texas style bbq compared to the godly stuff they cook up in memphis. Anybody know of any good spots between junction and the state line?

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Oh I forgot to mention, driving through the heart of Texas, seeing the mountains and experiencing the vastness of this part of the country is a mesmerizing experience. Driving I-10 from San Antonio to Junction there were almost no other cars on the road besides the occasional semi. There were many times when the only thing visible on the road in either direction was me. Looking at the map before I left I thought this would be the most monotonous leg of the trip, but let me tell you the vastness of this landscape is a humbling thing. I spent much of the time this afternoon thinking about the people who crossed this land before there were roads, and truly appreciating what those who've come before me have accomplished here.
I'm in awe of the men that looked at the landscape of this country and thought "We can build a road across this"

Good post's , glad you are still heading west ... That bridge looks like a scene out of a movie , you fully expect it to keep opening up and have to jump the gap between sides!!

Re: Cross Country Trip....
Good luck with your trip and keep Fred cool. It's getting hot here in Phoenix but is still really nice in the mornings; I would try to get up early and get going if possible.
I drove between here and Illinois 5 times in my '69 Chevelle; it was a blast.
