You need a solenoid heat shield. (the one below is just a generic search, but the GM one looks just like it... it may be the correct one...)

After his latest post about the truck not shutting off when key is turned off I would say it's a timing issue maybe.
The timing may or may not fix the problem.
The mini starter though is a good investment though for these trucks if you drive it regularly like I do.

I'd lean towards this. It goes with the starting issue. But also with dieseling (not related to the starting problem) an easy check is your idle, too much fuel at idle can cause dieseling on a hot engine. Check your A/F mixture and speed.

Was the starter new or old/used? I haven't noticed heat soak being a big problem with exhaust manifolds, usually when headers are put on. I don't think I've ever had a heat shield in place on any of my rigs. Just strange there's a lot of seemingly not-related issues. If it starts or cranks fine when jumped, but a different battery has no effect I dunno? lol freshly painted engine, did you scrape all your grounds? But that doesn't fit with it starting fine when cold.

Well I know it has been a while since I started this thread but I finally got the time to install a new mini starter from DBElectrical. It was $58.90 shipped. After installation I drove it for about 30 minutes in 90 degree heat. When I got home I shut it off and then fired it right back up three times in a row. Hopefully that problem is now history. Thanks for all the advice.

The new mini starter won't work on my truck. My starter mounts with 3 bolts going front to back. Can't find a mini starter like that. What did GM do in the past to prevent a heat soaked starter? Have never seen a heat shield on them in the past. Starter on mine weighs a ton, and is there an easy way to get the starter out around the exhaust pipe? Looks like I might hafta drop the exhaust on that side? Any answers or suggestions would be appreciated.

Mine mounted that way too. When the mini starter came I thought I had the wrong one. But when I slid under the truck and looked straight up there were the holes I needed to to mount it. I used one shim on both bolts and one split washer on each and it snugged right up. And it's a lot lighter (7 lbs) so it easier to mount.I used a floor jack to let the old one down, just had to wiggle it around a little to clear the exhaust. I still coulda used another hand though. Might want to look under your engine and see (course you gotta take the old starter off to see the holes).

I know this topic is old but I am having the same issue with my truck I replaced battery, positive cable and bought a new mini starter. Still didn't fix the issue. But I'm leaning towards the fusable link that runs to the starter from the ignition it seems unraveled and possible no good.

I have had similar symptoms with a fuel pump going bad.

I am by far no mechanic I know basics like starter swaps and what not but can someone verify those fusible links if bad would cause this issue?... I have a new fuel pump and a flow meter I am getting the correct amount of gas and psi.
My Distributor is brand new street fire MSI so I doubt its a coil problem.

I had the same issue on and off for a long time. It was such a pain that if I had the truck out I would go places where I didn't have to turn it off, or if I did I was going to be there for over an hour. I too had starters checked when cold and they worked fine.
My headers don't do anything to help the problem, but large tube factory manifolds are both hard to come by and expensive.
My solution was to use a 48 inch ground cable attached to the inside starter bolt (for a more direct ground), and a reflective Kevlar Heat shield blanket around the whole starter Assembly.
I haven't had a problem since, but I hold my breath every time I do a hot start.

I just had the same issue.
First of all heat soak from aluminum carb isn't going to make the starter crank slow. But yes the phenolic plate helps if u have to pump the gas to start after it sits a bit when hot.
The heat off the exhaust pipe is probably heating up the starter and making it crank slow.
I just installed a heat shield on my truck and problem solved
i too thought it was a battery issue at first.

alright so here is an update....
purchased mini high torque starter put a heat shield on it also wrapped my headers with DEI heat wraps.
The issue still persists.
changed out my battery and re did all my ground wiring.
The issue still persists.
shortened my gas line and removed them from every possible heat source in case of boiling/peculation.
could this be trimming?

I added a couple of extra straps to ground the engine to the frame, and ran new battery cables. The battery ground cable is now bolted directly to one of the starter mounting bolts, to eliminate the potentially high resistance connections in between. I did all that after I put a mini starter on it, because it still had hot start cranking issues. Now, it starts "hot", but if I'm pulling my 26' travel trailer, it gets hot enough (230F to 240F) that I have to pop the hood when I'm refueling (if I shut it off). I'll be going into the radiator next- it's warming up running up a hill (200F with a 180F thermostat) with no trailer, and the radiator is 13 years old, or so. Needs rodding out, probably. The engine's due for a rebuild, so I'll be diving into it pretty soon to prep it for the long hauls with the trailer. It'll all get done in that time frame.

it won't hurt to run a straight ground, ill try that.

Use a " heat blanket" around your new (if u go that route, which I bet u eventually will) mini starter. That will reduce the heat soak even more. Fix it right the first time, and forget about it!!!!

I posted a few pics a couple posts above this one I already bought the mini starter and a DEI heat shield. Hard start when hot still persist.
