Thanks. Yes, it is a first gen intercooler. I had the inside width from in between the inlet and outlet, widened 4.25'' so the intercooler will fit around the radiator support main braces. But still fit in between the head lamps and turn signals on the 88-91 set ups.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Looks great Dieselwrencher ... I used a aluminum intercooler out of a 2000 ford powerstroke , I cut and angled the inlet and outlet seems to work fine . I have seen guys use the 1st and 2nd gen intercoolers and that works fine also .

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Thanks Greg. I have a 7.3 intercooler, but it wasn't nearly wide enough. I didn't think of doing what you did, that is a good option though.

Today I got the dodge D60 under it. The owner wants to use the dodge steering box, so some mods to the steering shaft will be required. But the box its' self bolts directly on the frame. He is trying to find a pitman arm for a 6" lift for the dodge box. He is also looking for a steering box brace. I have to make some mods to the sway bar mounts, but I'm going to try and retain the chevy sway bar. Tomorrow I might try to do the rear axle. We'll see.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Thats why I had to cut and angle the inlet and outlet , worked fine with using the stock AC condenser .
I have use the 1st and 2nd gen but ran into fit issues doing a AC set up .
I think either way you will have to modify the core support .
Progress looks great ,look forward to seeing more ... Glad mine is done ...LOL

Ok cool, that's what I thought. Lets see some pictures when you get it back.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

I've been working on welding the inside of the cross member and boxing it. I have it all welded up, now just to finish grind it, drill a couple more holes, and get it back in the burb.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Today I sweated my butt off grinding and welding the cross member up. 98* out, real nice. Oh yeah, and absolutely no breeze. Dang it man! this weekend some time I'm going to try to get the engine work done, and paint the engine so it can go in for the final time.

We got the D70 out from under the donor dodge, and the owner started cleaning it up prepping it to go in.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

Looking good man. Is the sway bar going to get hooked up? Or does it not line up because of the 1/4 inch difference in spring spacing?

The sway bar isn't hooked up yet because if you use a dodge axle, you need the upper retaining plates too. So I'm going to have to modify the sway bar mounting points. In other words, I can't just bolt it on like the chevy one was originally.

Great work and cool build. In case you havent found a steering box brace, the ones from off road design are the best. Ive used many and its really worth the $60 or $70 for it instead of fabbing one

It looks like it, but there is still plenty of clearance.

Yep 6" before the dodge D60 which probably raised it another 1 1/2" in the front.

Thanks. It'll be a work horse for sure. The owner ordered one and it may have been from ORD. We should see it this week.

Re: 1988 Suburban "V Rig" Gets Cummins Power

The steering box brace showed up last week, last Thursday I power washed the front axle and under the body. I tried to get every nook and cranny I could. I also did the frame more too. This week the fuel lines should be in as well as the new brake lines. I've been working on the engine getting it ready to go. 8 out of 12 exhaust manifold bolts broke off, all the internal bolts that secure the gear housing to the block were loose, and there was no tab on the KDP. Also the crankshaft had bad pitting on the sealing surface for the rear main seal. I had to install a sleeve and different seal on it. Now the pan and front cover are back on. Tomorrow I'm going to install a new tappet cover gasket, clean the engine again, and paint it. Oh yeah, I already advanced the timing on the injection pump, and the engine is getting a little bigger injector. Getting closer...........

Just typical maintenance and things you want to check when you are un sure how the engine has been maintained.

Today I installed a new tappet cover gasket, and removed the injection pump. I forgot it is getting a 3k gsk in it. Tomorrow I'm hoping to paint the engine. We'll see.

True, but those exhaust manifold bolts dont sound like any fun.

It's a 12V head atleast, the 24V's are more fun for drill bolts out of.

I've never seen the difference between the 12 and 24 valve heads besides thr valves themselves.
