Re: Is that new Bedwood....? not exactly

Quote ....I understand the concern of sponginess because compared to a quartersawn plank of red oak, a composite 1x6x8 does have some flex in it. I didn't know what to expect until I was done and it was time to climb on up and see how it felt.

So glad you did this and proved it out for stability ..it is very good looking and as far as how it will look down the road,,all depends on it is taking care ,,,same as wood..
Most all old wood bed boards are warped and split ,,so for you to venture out and do this is worth a hand shake for testing it out ..heres mine..Highway72

Re: Is that new Bedwood....? not exactly

I took the plunge and bought 8 pieces of 5/4" x 6" x 8' Trex decking. Actual dimensions are 1" x 5-1/2" x 8'.
Need to decide between the following options:

1. Match Original Bed Height: Mill off half-inch from all the places necessary. The two planks that run along the frame rails will have to be almost entirely milled down.
Pros: Bed height matches tailgate height. Only the planks require changing.
Cons: Lots of work. May need to add more support bracing below.

2. Raise Bed Height by Half and Inch: Move the side rails up half an inch. Either cap the back end or cut a 45-degree bevel.
Pros: Less work, bed will be stronger, more weight in back when not loaded = better traction.
Cons: Bed will stick up half an inch above the tailgate, make sliding materials like 4x8 sheets difficult.
This problem can be worked around by placing a half-inch thick board on the tailgate before loading.

Which is better? Is there another option? Thanks!
