Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

64-66 big truck grill for my 64 c10.
Bowtie removed from center(going to use it somewhere else on truck).
Chevrolet letter bar removed from top of grill and reattached in center opening. Everything rechromed and bar on letter bar blacked out. I saw this on another truck a few years back and loved the clean, simple look of it.
Sorry about the fire and water damaged grill surround, it hadn't been stripped and phosphated yet when I took this picture.

Nice, I have wondered about doing this. Does the big truck grill bolt up the same?

Can you turn that grill around? I think it would look a little better with that gap above the grill smaller. Just my opinion and wondering if it would work.

awesome dean!
here are a couple more like it-

"Nice, I have wondered about doing this. Does the big truck grill bolt up the same?"

to make this setup work, you need to utilize all the support structure from the c10. and toss the c60 stuff

OOPS, I forgot to add that you need to remove the big truck headlight buckets and replace them with the C10 ones. You'll also need to weld some tabs to the back of the grill for the letter bar to mount to.

Yeah, Jon
The red truck picture was the one that inspired me to do mine!

Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

Rarest of the rare here, this is the only one I've ever seen. Its a chrome or aluminum grill with no mesh in the middle, and a bowtie in the center. I want one for Goldilocks, but severely doubt that I'd ever find one!

Just find a big truck grill and remove the Chevrolet bar off the top. The bowtie is already in the center and no mesh. A little different version of mine.

That would work except the big truck grills are smooth across the top, without "Chevrolet" stamped in the upper bar. I could cut the mesh out of a normal grill, but there's no way I'm ruining my perfect original grill!

John,
I missed the impressed lettering. Stock, painted 64-66 grills are pretty common and fairly cheap. Buy one and remove the mesh area, weld in a cross strap for the bowtie to mount up and rechrome or paint. I'll even donate a bowtie off a big truck grill to you.
Dean

Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

Brilliant thread! I love the way the pod hoods look with the GMC grilles, and I was planning a 63 grille with a flat GMC hood-now I know I like the look!

Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

I'm a 64-66 guy, but like the taller/fuller look of the '63 grills- 64-66 has a big open gap above the grill that I don't like. I did this quick photoshop and raised the top grill bar up a bit, not quite level with the headlight buckets. Something else to pile on the "to do" list...

Before and after:

What would it look like if the grill was rotated 180 degrees?

John,
There's something strange about your sample truck you're photo shopping. Is it sectioned or what? The grill seems to be sunk down into the top of the bumper making the top and bottom openings disproportionate. Compare the trucks in posts #28 & #30 with yours. Also the front fenders seem wider than the hood by quite a bit.
Dean

Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

Dean, I think it's a big truck grill that's been bolted straight in; the headlights are aimed down a bit. It does look closer to the bumper, and the bumper looks taller than normal. I think I've got a good straight-on shot of the blue '65 that I could re-chop; I know it's right.

Re: 60-66 hood and grille combos

that truck was on ebay, it was channeled over the frame a good 3 inches or more...had the frame rail right through the floor board.. I think what you are seeing is the bumper raised up with the channel.
somehow i do not have a 3/4 front shot of it...

check out these ram air hood ideas I was trying...
