Re: Top dollar for a real nice SWB?

The best way to get $30K out of your truck---is to spend $60k restoring it!!!

Unless you have something really cherry and extraordinarily clean---something that would pass barrett-jackson scrutiny------youre probably gonna get between 10 and 20K out of it.
I just watched a black 72 sell on Mecum this weekend for $21500. I know of the truck--the owner had 30-35K in it. And,, it was very nice. He as hoping for a lot more.

Not a chance. I have had offers well over $18K already. I have a build sheet and a receipt for every dollar spent for my truck and I am right at $34K building it. That isnt including labor cost spent on many portions of the truck or factoring my own time involved building.
Mecum isnt like Barret Jackson, they are more of a crap shoot to see what buyers will show up. I personally took a 1968 Camaro RS restored and modded to Mecum when it was in Des Moines and final bid was $15K. Took it to Kansas City to the next event for Mecum and the car sold for $28K.
As said before, Auctions are a crap shoot. I dont any person should base value of a truck due to what it sells for at one auction to the next. If I did that I would never buy, build, or sell.

The good thing is that you can ask whatever you want for a truck....its a free country.
What you'll get will depend on how long you are willing to wait to find that 'special' buyer that just happens to love exactly where you spent your time and money.
I'll stick with my initial comments about 'most' of these trucks running out of market value in the teens.
Don't get me wrong, I love these things....but guys start to think they have a mid 60's stingray or a Z28....aint it just aint true. There were hundreds of thousands of these things made and there is always another one just as nice around the corner (usually).
Here are some excellent examples of these trucks....lets see where the market takes them:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971C...item3f24914a31
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-...item257d1922e4
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevr...item4d0c053c2a (my favorite)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-...item232a588479
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-...item4d0be43a93
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/72-C1...item2ec7a905b2
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-...item2c6e46a2c1
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-...item35c6e6d4f7
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-...item3a809850db (I think this will be a 'no bids at all' truck...my prediction)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-...item19dbb79ee8
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1967-...item19db6e37e5
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BEAUT...item20d1e25b3a
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BEAUT...item41724b0170
....I threw a couple of higher value ones in there to see what happens in terms of bid interest. Lets see if someone picks 'em up (pardon the pun.)
All Good

Re: Top dollar for a real nice SWB?

I guess it does depend on how long you want to sit on it and wait for the buyer that just HAS to have it. When I started this thread, I was just trying to get a feel for what a really nice truck could go for. I guess it also depends on your opinion of what "really nice" actually is. I'll be the first to admit that I'm my own worst critic. I know where the flaws are, and although noone else may see them, I know they're there and those things bug me. Also, I am not in any way a good used car salesman! Not to brag, but I'm just way too honest. I treat others the way I want to be treated, and therefore will point out the little things that I don't like about a car I'm trying to sell. That's just me.

The truck I was talking about, I have since sold. I got pretty close to what I wanted for it. Now I did have freinds say I should hold out, as it's worth more, but they were not the ones to start flashing cash. Anyone can say "it's worth 40k" but as they say, money talks, bullsh*t walks.

But, since this thread has been brought back up, I will show anyone who cares to look at the link, what the dealer who owns it now thinks it's worth. Do I think it's worth his asking price? Well, no, or else I would have asked that. I got more than half of what he's asking for it, but damn!!!! I just can't see it selling for anywhere close to what he wants. It's a damn nice truck, probably way nicer than the average truck, and it won awards at just about every show I took it to, but still.

I did this whole truck in my 2 car garage in about a 2 year span. Maybe I'm in the wrong profession. Actually people do tell me I should do this for a living, but it's just a hobby to me, and doing it full time would burn me out I think. But, if anything ever happens to my current job, well, I guess I know what I'll be doing then.

Anyway, here she is. http://aeclassiccars.com/for-sale/19...vortec-pickup/

Let me know what you think.

Re: Top dollar for a real nice SWB?

I gues you should be flattered that a pro would market it at that price. I say "I guess" because I have a low opinion of car dealers in general, but even so he has to think he has enough margin he can fish at that for a while.

How did you advertise it when you sold it?

IMO....this is the style of the truck that warrants 30k+, the resto-mod or pro-touring restos. Classic looks inside and out with the best and lastest technology put into the drivetrain, brakes, suspension.

Re: Top dollar for a real nice SWB?

On an average of all price ranges... which state seems to sell trucks at a higher price?
