Anyone rebuilt an OEM sliding rear window?

Aftermarket pieces are available. Not an OEM match but they work. Last one I got was from Mike's Bump and Grind Garage, now out of business I believe. I'd call Wes at Classic Heartbeat or try another board vender.

If one is patient one might try and find a slider that is cheap and buy it for parts.

Looks good, I cant wait until you get it back together. If everything is tight and leak free I will by me a slider and do the same thing. Thank you for posting this up for everyone.

My 80 K10 has the rear slider. The local auto glass shop here in Lewiston had the upper and lower sweeps. Perfect match. They also had the catch assembly. Another perfect match. If I remember correctly these two items came to around 20 bucks. The rubber between the two glass panels came from the RV shop here in Clarkston. Perfect match and free at that.

The sweep inserts into the vertical metal post at the far right of the second image. This post has screws (shown) that attach to the outer frame. The weather stripping and a plastic insert that goes into the bottom of the outer, narrow "C" channel are also shown:

Third pic shows square rubber strips mounted inside the larger inner "C" channel at each corner that function as bumpers to stop the mobile glass. Mine are still surprisingly pliable and don't need to be replaced:

Sorry no more progress on my end yet - have been way too busy but my schedule is slowly easing up. I've posted all the details I have so far as regards the specific parts. I will finish this. I have to for my K20 build (link in signature below) and will post here once I'm back on the job. It's getting the right rubber parts that's the challenge - the slider is easy to assemble/disassemble.

Does anyone have the part number or company of the OE latch? I always thought my slider was aftermarket, but now I'm not sure, maybe just my latch. It was built by SouthCo Lester Pa. The rest of the window looks too contoured to be aftermarket.

These are/were available - I got one a while ago from Mike's Bump and Grind Garage - not sure the company is currently in business. Maybe Wes at Classic Heartbeat would have an idea?

If I remember correctly that latch was used on numerous years after 1972 and was still available from GM the last time I got one. I have 2 maybe 3 factory sliders up in my attic!

Finally completed the slider rebuild and it works well (pics installed on my K20). However, the vertical aluminum trim/handles had to be re-attached with silicone so I have concerns about long term longevity. As a consequence. I open the slider windows using the firmly affixed midline trim where the latch pieces attach. Who knows, it may hold up for a long time. The white weatherstrip shown in post #24 worked fine but I had to shave the base of the molding's "T" with a scalpel in order for it to fit inside the trim channel. Even with that, the fit was snug so I used Windex along the channel and inserted a dowel inside the wstrip to apply force along its long axis so as not to pull it out of the channel. The chunky rubber corner blocks (ex. on last pic post #8) cleaned up real well and honestly look fresh.


As an aside, I had rear window trim installed with the slider but GM shipped slider-equipped trucks without the rear window trim.

Try a local "aluminum products," & storm windows, & window replacements store. Auto glass shops probably wouldn't have the same kinds of weatherstripping on hand.

I had a siding, guttering & window replacement & storm window business for many years, & we had rolls & rolls of lotsa (dozen or more) different styles of similar weatherstripping that I kept on hand to do repairs. Had what looked to be a twin for the compressible tube weatherstripping in the photos. Not an uncommon type at all. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

If it wants to slip out after installed, "stake-it" into place near the bottom of the track - we always used a small straight tipped screw driver to punch down (lightly) the sides of the track that the bottom (T-part) slides in. That stops it from sliding down / falling out when the sun gets on it & softens the rubber & stretches the aluminum track a little bit.

Yep, same gasket you choose trim or no trim depending on whether you are using trim or not - just like that for regular one-piece glass. Pete
