Re: Wanting to put an overdrive into my 85
I have to look around for an overdrive column too. Maybe if I can find one then they might have a 700 to go along with it. If they had the driveshaft and all then that might make me look going towards the 700.

Re: Wanting to put an overdrive into my 85
At the end of the day it's your truck and ultimatley its your choice what transmission you go with. If you had a 200r4/700r4 sitting in your garage I would go with the 700r4 personally as it is the stronger of the two. But if you have access to an overdrive tranny for cheap then go with that. just make sure its in good working order before you swap it in. there is nothing worse than swapping in a component and have it not work.

also the weight compo the electras, olds 98, and the fleetwoods that had the 200 weigh about the same as your truck and had the 307 or 403 olds. in stock form a 200 and 700 are about the same for strength. a built 700 is about maxed at 650 hp a 200 built is around 1000 hp.

Re: Wanting to put an overdrive into my 85
I prefer the 200 over the 700 if I had a choice. As mentioned, the 2004R's can be made very stout and survive fine in GN's running deep 9's at well over 150 mph.
Personally I like the gear spread on the 200's better. The 2.75 first gear allows for a much closer 2nd gear so you don't have the huge rpm drop associated with the 700 1-2 shift. Another nice feature of the 200's I didn't see mentioned is that it has slightly more overdrive than the 700. .67 vs .70 if that matters to you. The uni-bolt bell housing is also nice which makes the 200 a versitile swap in just about anything. Very popular swap with the BOP guys. |

yeah the only thing i really like on the 700 is that deep first gear helps for truck purposes sometimes like a bulldog gear kinda. a truck is the only thing id prefer one in.

Yeah I guess if you run a 2.73 or 3.08 gear and don't want to change that, then the 3.06 first gear in the 700 would work okay. Help give the truck a little more spunk around town.
