Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

I never understood the whole GM thing with multiple models that are basically the same. firebird/camero. gmc/chevy truck. grand national/monte carlo.

sure theres little differences but nothing that couldnt have been just a number on a chevy spid.
turbo monte carlo.... nah thats stupid, lets create a whole new company and sell the same stuff with a different name.

Ford did it with Lincoln and Mercury where as Chrysler did it with Dodge and Plymouth so its not just a GM thing. It opens up the vehicles to a broader audience.

Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

My father who was a GMC man from way back always insisted that GMC trucks were of better quality. He had worked at a Chevrolet dealership but yet even when employed there would buy a GMC instead of a Chevrolet. He always insisted that since GMC were sold by Oldsmobile,Pontiac, and Buick dealerships where the vehicles were more expensive and quality was expected because of price. When Dad passed away he left his 1971 GMC Sierra Grande to me,which was not ordered with comfort ride (coil springs ).
We had numerous conversations regarding the difference of the two brands. It usually came down to GMC used leaf springs as a base option Chevrolet used coils base but either were available upon special orders. Early GMC trucks used the Pontiac V8 engines when Chevrolet used the Chevrolet V8.

Negative.

We'd run about 7 or 8 Chevys in a row and then a GMC.

Same assembly line.

In more modern times Cadillac went down the same line, too.

Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

I only difference i see is the front clip, tail gate, an badging. Maybe nicer trim also. I dont think it would be harder to do though.

Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

Yes, but from what i have read they are a torque monster gas pig. I can't recall if they were in the 10 series or just 20 30 and up.

Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

one thing I'm confused about with this topic is the hoods...if gmc used the same basic fender that was found on the 68 chevy, then did they change the hood at some point? all gmcs arent slant noses, are they?

The hoods for GMC were the same as Chevrolet. 67/68 had slant nose hoods. 69-72 were bull nose hoods

Re: GMC - Chevy what's the real difference?

The 67-72 era trucks are where GMC and Chevy came together as the same truck with different badging. Coming into '67 GMC only ran I6 and V6 while Chevy ran I6 and V8. Generally,a 1/2t GMC will have a Dana 44 and a 3/4t will have a Dana 60. GMCs came through with rear leaf springs, unless ordered with coils and Chevys visa-versa.
GMC was making trucks before Chevrolet. Even once they were both under GM. I guess they decided to start making Chevy Trucks to offer light trucks at Chevy dealers and let BOP sell the GMCs. The value on "all" trucks varies and Chevy vs GMC is purely a matter of preference and noting to do with value. A refined vintage GM Truck collector would gladly pay top dollar for fine GMC example. The different companies under GM aren't in competition with each other. They actually add variety to the market so GM covers more of it. You see Chevy dealers selling Buicks

What they did is in '69 when the hood changed,GMC changed the grille surround. It's wide and serves to fill the gap between the shorter hood and longer fenders.
