Re: Pic of charcoal canister
The one I bought with that same part number was 6 or 7 years ago and I paid almost a hundred for it. I also assumed that it had been discontinued so I was surprised to see it available at this price. The only difference cosmetically is the purge valve has a very slightly different cap but all the ports are the same and the manufacturers logo is even the same.

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
I wonder if you could open the old one and replace the charcoal media?

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
If you download the service manual for your particular year it will be listed as the "Evaporation Control System". For '71 C-10 everything is around pages 8-8 through 8-10. There are procedures for removal but it's pretty easy to figure out once you figure out the entire bracket can come off. The $3 filter that can be bought at any parts store looks like it's just a filter to keep things out of the canister. When I pulled out that filter the carbon started coming out. It looked like there was a very thin sheet of foam that was used to keep the carbon in when it was new but over 40+ years that had rotted away. So now I have an empty canister that I plan on dumping fish carbon in and putting back together. The canister does do something. My garbage smells like exhaust now.

As far as the canister goes, none that I'm aware of

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
Is this part really necessary or can you do without it?
I have 72 K5 and it doesn't require to be smog checks. I started pulling everything out because I'm putting in a fresh motor in so I'm starting to put together a parts list for replacing fuel and brakes lines with stainless steel. I'd rather not use it if you don't need. Plus it's one less stainless steel fuel line I would need to buy

Re: Pic of charcoal canister
One of my '71 K10's canisters had been removed by a PO and it ran fine but I noticed fuel odor every time I was under the hood. It was then that I realized that it was missing and put one in and the odor was gone.
