lowdownstar, a 3" cutoff wheel on a die grinder would work well. You could use a cutoff wheel on a 4 1/2" grinder but the 3" wheel gives you much better control. An air saw or jig saw would work too with the right blade but I feel the up and down action at the start and end of cut causes the material to shake and cause damage. I've tried them all and IMO, the 3" zip disk (cutoff wheel) works best for me.
Good to know thanks.

Re: Tubbing

Oh I cut my bedsides with a cutoff wheel. 4 1/2 cut off wheel on a electric grinder. I forgot to answer that part of the question sorry.

Re: Tubbing

Not bad at all eh dubie! If they are wide enough, you could get both sides done with one fender.

Re: Tubbing

Yeah that's it. But the ones I bought were wide enough for both fenders but they did not have the smooth lip on both sides so I bought two. If those have the same radius lip on both side (looking at the pic it sure looks like it is the same on both sides) I would have bought those and cut them in half. The ones I bought was 9 inches wide I could have easily went with 4 1/2 inch wide tubs and been cool.

Hey dubie, I see you are from Flin Flon. Ever run into the King of Obsolete? Seems like he's quite the guy.

Re: Tubbing

You can use factory tubs and just narrow them. I started with a full dodge dakota bed and VERY carefully cut it until it dropped into my bed, then welded it in. It took the tubs from 10 inches wide to about 2 inches, and I run a 275/40R18 tire with room to spare. Junkyard tubs are definitely cheap enough if you can find some that weren't beat to death like I did.

i cut out the bed side with a jigsaw and welded a 4'' strip of steel in there
notice the bed detail extends thru the tubs

I don't know who that is. I did a search on the forum to find the name but came up empty. I'm sure I'd know him if he's from here

Re: Tubbing

I ended up getting 2 barrels from a local Esso dealer for free so I'm going to hack them up and make a tub.

What are your guys thoughts of a full barrel tub? one that goes all the way across the bed?
Just looking for some personal opinions. I'd have to join 2 barrels together to reach the 50" span

Re: Tubbing

I PERSONALLY think it looks like a builder took the easy way out, unless you NEED all the space like for a bagged truck. More importantly, I think it destroys the continuity of what could be a beautiful bed....with lots of work. Remember, this is just personal opinion, no harm ment.

Re: Tubbing

Use the trailer fenders my friend, remember you have to look at it all the time. there is nothing worse that having something staring you in the face that you wish you had done different!

Re: Tubbing

The greatest compliment to your work, if you use the barrels, is for someone to like what you've done but not be sure what you used or how you did it. When you tell them, then they can see it and are properly amazed. IMO, if you use that as your guide, let your creativity run. I've seen some barrels used in horrible fashion, though.
