Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

Great Lit on the Detroit Diesel (or GM Diesel as they were known back then). It was the Engine that helped win the War. Seeing that it was introduced in 1938, it was well ready to be widely used in WWII.

I would like to make a list someday of what they put those Engines in. Even more after the War.

Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

You got that right! Growing up it seemed every crane ran those Detroits. Lots of fire trucks, too. Then there was the big pans (earth movers) bogging down taking a big cut, then rolling fast cross terrain. I used to watch those things a lot. My best friend's dad was an excavator. Drove a Diamond T dump truck.

There is a dockbuilding outfit out here that still uses one of those LCM landing craft boats from WWII, Super cool piece of equipment to watch in action.I think it runs twin 671's.

Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

Tim,

I actually have 5 or 6 original Brochures that I picked up at my local GMC Dealer back in the 70's. I believe I have the 9500 one that you posted above. I have them in storage. But I never did learn the art of posting pictures or scans.

I sent them to John at the ATHS about 8 years ago for their library and along with his computer guidance it still took me many hours.

I'll try to dig them out someday.

1962 was the first year Chevy started to use the Detroit in medium duty trucks!

Oh, I really like that one, I don't know why but I really get off on those 23456 C 80 tractors, that and narrow nose single axle pete,s. That reminds me, where are the AMT 23456 C80 models? Keep those C80 pics coming.

Many thanks to special-K for starting this thread, this could turn out to be one of the best heavy hauler theads ever. These are great examples of 1950s art work put out by the GM ad people, even got the brochure for my 630 with the 471DD, just beautiful.

Yep, the model industry really missed the boat when it comes to medium duty and heavy duty trucks. They only did a few Fords, Louisvilles and C series tilt cabs, but no Chevys or GMC's. There were a few resin builders who converted the pickup cabs of AMT models into medium duty trucks. NOt sure if they are still available. Here is a M80 I did a while back. Dump body and frame from a Louisville kit, resin cab from the Modelhaus, I believe.

I like it! I have some Dinky or Corgi diecast toys of those '60s MD/HDs somewhere. I love these and the needle nose Petes, too. When I lived near Flagstaff guy on my road had one I came close to buying. That was 30+ years ago and haven't gotten any closer since. I'm glad this thread is appreciated. I figured you guys would like this stuff and all it was doing was sitting in my computer. I'm gettin' down there on my collection, there's still some left

Thank you for all of the fantastic literature. I love those old ads. The ones around WWII are great, I love how GM contributed at home and deployed.

Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

In about 1973 or 74 I was in my teens, went to work for Commercial Engine Service in Gardena Cal, my job desription was tear down engines and get them ready for rebuild. They were the southern cal detroit shop, they aquired a contract from the navy to rebuild 110 engines out of PT boats, they were 671"s with graymarine transmissions on them. My job was to tear down 2 engines and trans, put the iron in the hot tanks and the aluminum in the cold tanks, before I did that I had to pull the 2 engines and trans from the tanks from the day before and scrape all the gasket surfaces ready to build. After 2 months I could have won the world champion for the fastest time disassembling a 671 detroit engine. To bad they didn't teach me to put them back together, I didn't care to stay in LA that long. I still think about all the PT boats in ww2 that ran 671"s let alone the landing craft, mine sweepers and that must be a fraction of the equipment that used detroits. Without them we may not have won WW2 so some people shouldn"t bad mouth them so much. Long live detroit diesels.

Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

I guess that job planted a seed.

A lot of trucking companies in the north kept one Detroit powered truck because they would start when the others wouldn't,then use it to start the others. I never heard of a house burning down because the firetrucks had Detroit power.

Lemme see wadda got...

Re: Pic Thread: Ads & Lit

Nice looking truck.

I also like the White '62 above with the optional 4-53. I believe you could have also got the optional 8-Speed Road Ranger trans with it.

I would very much prefer the 8-Speed Road Ranger over a 2-Speed Rear, but I have heard that they were not the best transmissions.

Being a Road Tractor that one would have Air Brakes.

Cool Truck.

It's hard not to want one of these after looking at the sales literature. Very effective marketing tool!
