I found a paper in my truck from a few years ago when I went to a car show and wieghted the truck on a Highway Scale. With me, my wife and couple of suitcases in the truck box it weighted 2882 pounds on the front tires and 1914 pounds on the rear tires for a total of 4796 pounds. I didnt realize out trucks were that heavy and that is one of the reasons it is hard to get good gas mileage from our trucks, especially with original drivetrains in them.

Actually I was surprised when I had my truck weighed for "tear weight" at a rock and gravel pit. What surprised me is when I had that information I looked up what my friend's (then) modern 1994 pick-up weighed in at. I was over 1500 pounds LIGHTER than his rig.

What gives them better mileage is computer controlled engine management systems that continually changes the fuel mixture based on what the computer is reading from various sensors. Also what helps is overdrive transmissions. I would wager to say that if you put a modern V8 and most importantly all its computer controls into a 1972, put a computer controlled auto or better yet a manual with overdrive, you would get VERY close to a modern truck's gas mileage.

I used my truck for hauling stuff to the dump. Empty it always scales out at 3940 for my 1970 C20 long bed. My hummer scaled out at 7920, so I feel good about the 3940

Old thread....On the scrap yard scale today 3710 lbs empty. 68 K10 4 speed 250 6 short step side. No front or rear bumper or spare tire or tail gate...GM listed curb weight is 3737

Another interesting point is that the trailing arm trucks should weigh slightly more than the leaf spring trucks due to the extra components/gear under the back end vs. the 2 sets of leafs.
My C10/Lwb/350-auto/a-c/ps-pb/trailing arm truck comes in very close to 4000...somedays a bit more.

The book numbers for a 72 C10 lwb V8 show the leaf option to be 17 pounds lighter. For those who must know its, -11 lb front axle and -6 lb rear axle curb weights.

That's interesting Tim...I always knew that the leaf spring trucks were lighter but didn't know the number difference.
I would have thought it to be a little more given the apparent differences at a glance in the 2 systems...but ya' never know.

First time across the scales (without a trailer)it was only 4780 lbs. I was surprised to be less than 5000.
67 Burban with 350/350 with a GV overdrive. Me at 195, a 3/4 tank of gas, no back seats, trailng arm rear with bags. Static drop in the front.

According to the drive on scales at the County Landfill, 70 LWB (wooden Bed) C-10 weighs 3950, with me and a 1/2 tank of fuel in it

I haven't taken my truck over a scale yet, so I can't add anything to that, but just want to say to HO455, nice bridge pic! I've been over that many times. I occasionally explore the abandoned parts of old Highway 30 north of there.

I used my '72 2wd Blazer for work for 25 years. My buddy and I weighted it, 3400 in the rear and 1800 in the front + 5200lbs (no beams). Onboard 220v compressor cords nails roof rack to many tools.

For what it's worth a dump scale says my C20 with BBC & 400TH weighed approx. 4800-4900. I don't remember the exact number, I believe high 4700-4800. Less 340 lbs. in occupants brings it about 4500 dry. Strikes me as low, then again I never fill up the tank, can only guess how how much gas is in there, and surely it's lost some body weight in favor of self-ventilation & drip.

My 71 K20 with 350, NV4500, NP241, Dana 60 front and Dana 80 rear with custom flatbed weighs in at 6200#..... not sure how much the bed weighs over a factory bed...

At our local recycling yard if you have to go into the yard you have to weigh your vehicle before & afterwards. My C-20 Ramp truck with just me in it and lets say full tank of gas it weighed 6720! I don't remember how much gas I had at the time.

Mine gained about 500 pounds and then lost it this afternoon when I went up and got a bunch of river rock. Going to need about 1000 pounds more, and some more flag stone. I should run the old girl across the scales sometime.

I have a slip from the local dump, '67 c20 long bed weighs in around 4870. Has AC, 327, power steering, slightly oversized knobby tires.

Not sure how some of these trucks are so light... I'm hoping to see under 4k lbs when I'm done but I'm not optimistic!

Guess we have more than trucks in common, what's not to like about rocks less digging. I haven't built with them a few years, but a rock wall is on the horizon come spring. On the cheap for someone. Not so much looking forward to it, but this one will be easy (cough!) At least they'll all be delivered this time around and it's a small lot.

I thought my first rock wall was a (*&*^, about 300' long 18" deep, but not too tall. 10-11 months as a much younger man. Then I took on the truck, 6-7 years

The rocks are for the parkway. We got gravel and flagstone months ago. Finally set the flagstone level with the sidewalk and the curb yesterday. The river rocks are going between the flagstone sections to keep the bimbo down the street from walking her dog and herself through the gravel and scattering it onto the sidewalk and the street. One of my neighbors down the street has bark and gravel in his front yard (we are both set up with drought-tolerant plants) and his gravel and bark get scattered all over, too. We leveled it all out yesterday, and when I went out to walk the dog this morning, the gravel was kicked all around, already. If this gets disturbed after the river rock is all in, I'm going to cement it. But I'm hoping that it's too uncomfortable to walk over the lumps that she'll keep off of it. I'd say something to her, but people who act like that already have a chip on their shoulder, and it would just escalate.

My 72 C20 came in at 4860 pounds a couple of years ago when I was getting a load of gravel. That included about 250 pounds for my daughter and me so say right around 4610 pounds. It's a small block truck with air and is original other than the split rims have been replaced and the back bumper is a custom job. Also a few pounds have rusted away.............

I was imaging carnage like that with only a 12 bolt.
