Too bad you're not close or I would offer a fair deal on that bed. Its miles ahead of mine. Don't cut, good OEM steel is tough to replace.

Re: Save or Cut down Long Bed

That bed should bring really good money in our area. Dont cut it, sell and buy a nice short box, or a new one. I think you would be time and money ahead

Re: Save or Cut down Long Bed

$1000-1800 for Long beds!!! Around here you can't sell a mint one for $300. Mint short stepside bed is MAX $500 & a mint short fleet is $500-1000. I can't imagine paying anymore as that's what a full truck costs.

Re: Save or Cut down Long Bed

why cut it down? The 2wd long beds i have had experience with drive and ride WONDERFULLY!!!! I can understand that lots of people desire short beds even I do but spend the money on other things IMO! it goes both ways so there is not really a right or wrong with THIS truck, if it was a rust free big block Cheyenne or CST that was completely loaded with desirable and rare options i would think twice.

I say cut it down.Sounds like maybe you have funds to buy new bed sides. If you mess it up oh well.If it turns out good then you will have more dough in your pocket.

Re: Save or Cut down Long Bed

I don't know if this helps. I have two long trucks that I am building in my body shop that are gonna be short beds when done. One is a 68 GMC it is a factory Big-block truck with air power steering and brakes buddy buckets and speed warning. It also had a wood floor and the bed was pretty nice. I am replacing the frame with a short and putting 5 lug rolling stock on it and not cutting that bed. The other is a 70 model Chevy that is nothing much other than a truck but I think the shorts will sell better than the longs. It will be a big-block t400 as well tilt buckets and the like but no cut bed or frame. I think the labor involved to do the cutting could be used elsewhere and pay off somewhere else. I 'm sure many won't agree with me that is why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Jim

I would like to see some of these "mint" short beds. I constantly watch kijiji/craigslist for parts for these trucks. From Victoria to Winnipeg. I very rarely see anything of value in regards to truck boxes. Maybe I'm missing something.

I wouldn't cut it. It will be too much work. Start hunting for a short box.

Since I got into buy & selling the 67-72 era 4 years ago. I've come across quite a few on the West coast. Bought and sold a few, but not all of them were listed. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled for regular parts listings and parts trucks. I've never seen a short stepper sell for more than $500 here. I had my stepper on CL for a year at $400 and it was great shape, needed a wood floor but was rust/dent free & complete. Short fleets I've seen sit on CL for a year priced at $500 in OK condition. Straight but needing work. I've seen tons of great shape short fleets in the $5-600 range though. I buy most stuff from the US though as I'm beside the border.
