Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
Cool gauge swap! I'm picking up my NV4500 in a couple of days so this setup may go into my truck since I will be needing a speedo

If it's the 4x4 the speedo gears are in the xfer case. I kept using the same ones I had in my NP208.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
A dodge transmission also has mechanical speedo gears in the tailshaft for a 2WD housing. I just happened to find a GM transmission really cheap, and I never really cared for the factory gauges anyways, so this was a win-win situation for me.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
I was going to be doing an NV4500 swap into my CC when I get the time. I was also putting in the front buckets & console into my CC from a Suburban. Would you mind posting a picture or a measurement of the distance between the shifter boot and the console. Doesn't appear to be much room and I need a T-case shifter also. Thanks

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
I can get you that tomorrow, I plan on taking it out for its weekly drive tomorrow anyways. There's more room than you'd think, but I'll get an exact measurement.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
Are there any gauges that fit the small holes like the 4" fit the large? I will be doing this on my '77 but would like to do as little cutting as possible. Btw, it came out amazing and the write up is awesome. Oh, and did you use factory sending units or VDO?

Updated post with reloaded pictures. The original post was too old to edit, so I'm doing them with a quote. If a moderator wanted to paste this quote back into the original post, this post can be deleted.

Any ideas why the images don't show on my end? I even clicked on the broken-image icon and it goes to Imageshack and asks me to start an account.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
Sniper - if I understand correctly from reading the text, you were able to use your '86 bezel over an earlier '70's square body housing after all the surgery was done to fit the gauges?
I installed the low profile Speedhut spin on gauges in my '74 C20 build. Due to time constraints and an aborted hydro-dipped bezel install on a bezel that was not the correct year, forced, forced me cut up my really nice OEM bezel. I am not 100% satisfied and want the gauges more recessed than the front mount option we were left with. . . the visibility is not optimal as they are currently. I have been considering fabricating a custom bezel to recess the gauges, but it sounds like you used your flat one-piece '86 bezel on the mid '70's dash housing and bolted the unmolested bezel back on. . . correct?

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
I'm getting a bit confused with the terminology, but I'll try and explain what I used and what I modified.
The only donor part I used that wasn't from my '86 was the metal instrument cluster face from a 70s truck. This is the black piece of the instrument cluster itself that surrounds the gauge faces in their housings, and bolts directly to the light blue instrument cluster housing. This piece was plastic in my 86, and I didn't feel like it would be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the gauges being attached directly to it. Everything else was from the 86. I had to cut up the instrument cluster housing (the light blue piece), and the clear lens of the instrument cluster. I didn't have to modify the bezel at all (the aluminum colored and black plastic trim piece that surrounds the gauges and includes the AC vents, radio, etc), it clears the gauges faces just fine since they are still in the factory location and depth. Hope that helps!

I borrowed your ideas for my 85 when I removed the idiot lights for real gauges. I kept the stock speedo and fuel gauge though. Real happy with it.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
Glad to know that it's helping people out. I'm still very happy with the gauges several years later, and I'm finally getting around to finishing the interior repaint, sound deadening, and carpet that I started back in 2012. Right now the car is apart for a Vintage Air install while I take care of those other things. After that, the windows are coming out to deal with some leaks and rust that's starting to form, and it will likely get a repaint to go along with. There's also an 8.1L along the way to replace the old 454 between the fenderwells. I'll try to do some more writeups as I go along.

Do you follow Dirty Larry? He's the resident expert on 8.1's and square bodies. Probably THE expert.

Re: VDO Gauge Panel Build - Using factory housing - 86 C20 Suburban
Absolutely. I think I've read every post that he's made on the 8.1, and there's a ton of good info he's added to the community. I actually used a lot of his information when I did the NV4500 swap on the truck, so it's only natural to follow along with the 8.1.
