Re: Does anyone know who makes this Bed Removal Tool

My two post lift was $1499 and the brand is Northstar. I don't remember the dealers name but he lived in FL or south MS and had warehouses rented all over and I picked mine up from one of those. He also sold tire machines and all sorts of shop type stuff. Great guy, I had a small problem at first and called him he said I want you happy if your not I will pay my crew to remove it from your shop or pay to have the competitors lift put in its place.never had another seconds worth or trouble. It is great for pulling cabs beds, I even once pulled the cab and front cap on a 90 model truck by moving the compressor to the side cause it had just been charged and didn't want to pay to recharge it so I saved it all by keeping it all together. It was a little work but doable. Jim

No you didn't. You mentioned building a simple cross bar using wood. A way that does work. I have done it that way in the past, I won't do it again. Too flimsy and unpredictable. The set up that I now use utilizes stabilizer arms that stops either end of the box from tilting too far. That's like comparing apples to oranges.

Click in the link in my post above. I'm pretty sure there are some pics in there. I don't have any other pics right now.

How about a Stepside bed? Any suggestion or pics on how to lift them?

Re: Does anyone know who makes this Bed Removal Tool

If you have a cherry picker or chain hoist simply hook some lite chain to each corner post pocket of the bed and hook them to the hoist, lift and remove. Or two people can lift and remove the stepside bed no problem.

I too do not know who makes that nifty tool. Its hard to concentrate on it with that cool hair style in the picture! Here at Rottenwood Garage we use 4 people, an engine lift or heck, why not a crane.

No dice with a K20, 4" lift and an 8' bed the arm of the lift won't extend far enough to the center of the bed to find a balance point..I did this and it was a harry ass move, unfortunately i will be removing the bed again soon, need to find a bit more stability next time..

Hadn't thought about a long bed; all of my experience is with SWB.

Didn't seem bad at all the two or three times I tried it. Perhaps I lucked into the sweet spot.

I also made this little bed stand out of scrap lumber.

It made tranportation to/from the paint shop easier and the guys in the shop seemd to appreciate having it at working level.

The 4x4 posts correspond to the farthest box bolt holes. I shot a lag bolt through the holes into the end of the posts to secure the box.

No sweat Keith, I just wanted for others with an 8' bed to realize this doesn't work too well as you cant reach the center of the bed to find a good balance point, i do think if the picker arm and the front legs of the lift were to be extended it would work.

Re: Does anyone know who makes this Bed Removal Tool

The lift on the show is a sheet rock lift. My uncle did sheet-rocking for 40 years and I saw several of these over the years. However this is an awesome twist to get use out of one. I wish I had thought of that before now. I will see if he still has one and get a picture and manufacturer. Of course there are lots of different types but most of them are similar even today to this one.

If there is room in your work area to push the cherry picker in from the side rather than from the rear where the picker arm is more centered over the bed is it strong enough to lift the 8' bed and pull away from the truck?

You can do it from the side. I have. It's a little dificult if the truck is lowered but it can be done. In fact the pic I posted on page one is done from the side. Although this is on a shortbox, I think it would work just fine on a long box.

I want to let everyone know that i stand corrected.

You can reach the center balance point from the rear IF you take off the rear bumper first...

Geez. That's not a rear bumper; that's a secondary load platform!

Re: Does anyone know who makes this Bed Removal Tool

The lift on the show is not a sheet rock lift.
The one end engages the tailgate trundles for a very solid connection point. This keeps the bed from moving left and right which is my biggest worry.

Moving a freshly painted bed that you have worked on for months and having it swing from a single point is pretty scary for me.

I do wish I had a two post lift and I would use that for sure.

Does anyone know how much a wood short bed (with wood) weighs?

That's what I guessed back in post #22 Can't say for certain that is what it is, but I think the color combo is a clue.
