Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
Ok...now I am REALLY jealous!
1 - You're on the trip of a lifetime. 2 - You're in your new truck that is REALLY cool looking. 3 - Your wife is along and doesn't mind the trip. 4 - You have your best friend with you 5 - You're in one my most favorite parts of this country and the best time of the year. Have yourselves a ball! I am with you in spirit every bit of every mile. WooHoo!!!! |

Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
When passing thru Gallup, good place to eat is Earl's, Panz Alegra, Jerry's Cafe. There are some gas stations between Winslow and gallup so no worries there.
Also you can get on the frontage road, good ol Rt 66 at Continental Divide exit, it's about 20 miles east of Gallup and can stay on that all the way past laguna up to exit 117, lot of good stops for pics as well. But I'd only drive those roads during daytime, if passing thru at night just stay on I40. Any questions feel free to ask

Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
Also....you're coming up on a little town called Grants. It's a bit east of Gallup. If you happen to be in that area around mealtime (any of the three standard meals), drop in to a place on the east side of town.
It's off the interstate on old 66. The town is a dusty shadow of what it once was back 60 and more years ago long before President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act. Look for a little place called "El Cafecito" on the north side of the street. It's got great "new Mexican" food. Its not like Mexican food you'd get in other areas of the country. If you like tasty and hot, ask for the "special" green sauce the owner makes up for himself. It's not too hot but real tasty. Make sure you have some fresh sopapillas and honey !!!!!! |

Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
more pics from yesterday!
we went screaming by a junkyard and i thought to myself, i wonder if they have an OE steering wheel for this thing. soooooo. flipped around and went back. no wheel, but the owner was nice. we paid 5 bucks for 'admission' and went in to look around. the owner said he only has 'quality' junk

Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
cruising across the desert along Route 66 between hackberry and seligman, we decided to stretch our legs. and yes we were reading all the burma shave signs! if you dont know who the signs belong to, you haven't driven far enough!

stop in seligman for lunch at the snow cap. Highly recommend the Chorizo burger and chocolate malt! the entire inside of the ordering area is filled with business cards.

Made it to the Grand Canyon…no problems. one brake fade on the highway, but i guess thats 4 wheel drum brakes for you!
we stayed in the mastic lodges. cozy. nothing fancy and does the job. we went for a 2 hour hike before heading out to the 'corner of winslow arizona'

Re: Cross Country...or Bust? 'THE' trip!
finally arrived today to la posada. this place is awesome and i would highly recommend it to anyone. its very romantic and you can sit outside in 8 acres of garden area to watch the trains come by. there is also some very cool scrap metal art such as 'jolly' the camel. rather fitting that today is wednesday (hump day!)
i have to wait for my wife to download 'the cooler' photos off of her camera. but for now these iPhone pics will have to do!
