Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
It's not so hard to believe they were painted AFTER they rolled off the dealership lot. I bet a lot of buyers were upset to throw down money on a truck only to see the new models with a "better" in their opinion paint scheme. How many brand new Camaros, Challengers, Mustangs have been painted within 6 months of ownership? I know at least 10 in my hometown and have a friend that didn't even drive his Camaro off the lot he had it trailered to a paint shop to add stripes and a cut and buff.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Are you claiming this as factory applied paint in 68? What are you paint codes? My understanding is 511 Ochre (and two-tone variations) was a 70-1/2 spring release used from 70-74.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
There are 3 of these exact 1968 trucks, my GMC and 2 Chevys this same two color combo here in my town. I believe mines original paint faded, patina, etc.I just bought some rattle cans of the factory paint codes and even sprayed some on my friends original paint truck to check and its an exact match. Also had this Red 67 GMC shortie, small window and never saw another 67 anything but one solid color scheme, you can see many of the factory colors (Chevy Hood) on it since it used parts from 5 different trucks. The 67 ended up this orange with red clear coat.
I could have missed other 67 colors (joking) Don't know if that helps or confuses.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
I may be mistaken but that upper/lower trim combo was not even available until 1971. Did they put prototype trim on it too? I'm alright being wrong but this does not sound legit to me.

The BX2 lower wide molding was introduced in 69 replacing the earlier narrow B98 bodyside moldings. The Deluxe Two-Tone paint applied between the upper and lower moldings was production option for 71-72. As to House13's truck. Almost two years ago he posted to a thread clearly stating then his truck was a D89 pinstripe truck. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...8&postcount=20 Unfortunately "I was told..." is nothing you can ever take to the bank.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
My truck originally had a lower white paint feature. It belonged to my father-in-law. We inherited it after he died. The SPID shows white/hugger orange/white. I would prefer it still be that way, and will eventually paint it that way in my alleged copious free time. It is currently as you see it in my avatar, just white cab upper and posts, the rest all orange. I personally prefer the white/orange/white combination, and "busted his chops" about it when he had it repainted back in the '80s. But it wasn't my truck back then.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Would anyone have any photos of how far into the door pillers the white roofs extended? I'm assuming it runs to the lip for the weatherstrip? I want to do my 72 in blue/white two tone and I plan in doing the white tomorrow (cab only right now) Also, should I ask for any specific shade of white when I'm at the paint store tomorrow?

The factory white code 521 has a number of brand crosses. Here is a link that shows the various brands and their matching color codes. http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcod...del=ChevyTruck

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Could someone tell me the measurement for the white area (below the gas cap) similar to that photo a few posts up? I'm guessing it's around 14" but I'd sure like to know before I go too much further

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Sounds like you are wanting to paint the Deluxe Two-Tone style. The paint simply extends between the upper and lower body side molding holes. Go center to center and you are fine.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
SS Tim you are very informative... & you have made me very curious about my 1971 C20 that is blue and white at the moment.... I will have to take a couple of pics of the truck and the SPID and post... I purchased the truck from the original owner who purchased it brand new.... Thanks! SS Tim!

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
My truck is a 559 code, lighter blue just on the cab and darker blue on everywhere else.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Nice example of the factory "Custom Two-Tone", a 510 Medium Blue roof over a 523 Dark Blue body. It and its reverse, code 558 (below) are most often seen painted over as a solid or with white.

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
These factory two tone med blue / dark blue seem to be more rare, I've only seen a few....am I right in thinking that?

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
Blue/blue "Custom Two-Tones" are few and far between that is for sure and the med. blue roof 559 seems even less frequent. Considering it was offered for three years in two combos you'd think there would be more but there are only three I recall seeing in original colors over the years (these are two).

Re: The first year for two-tone paint?
I think I may have not painted my center (white) stripe high enough. I tried to estimate by looking at photos, but now that it's finished, I think it may be off by about an inch. This photo shows my measurement from the centerline of the front fender wheel well up to the edge of the stripe (where my molding will go. I have about 3 3/4 inches. Could someone with a factory two tone maybe measure theirs and let me know what they have at that same point?
It still needs wet sanded and holes drilled for the molding, but I'm going to wait to first make sure I have it painted correctly
