OK, I went and talked to my tranny guy today about this 700r4, the 1st thing he told me was to go talk to the guy that built it, ( I am going to do this ) he knows the guy that built it and said he is damn good! Now this is what he said about the 700r4, they are a pile of sh!t, yes they can be built to stand up behind a lot of HP, but are very costly to build one for that, ( around here anyways) he told me that if he was in my shoes, that he would go with a 3:23 or 3:55 gear in the rear, then build the th350 with a set of lower 1st and 2nd gears, and that it would come out the gate as if it had a 4:56 that is if going with 3:23 rear gear, or it would come out the gate like it had a 4:88 gear if going with the 3:55, then when it goes into 3rd, it would be 1 to 1 with either 3:23 or 3:55 depending on what I go with, he said that the th350 will with stand a whole lot more abuse then the 700r4, and that it take a lot more money and know how to build the 700r4. so with this said, I am going to go over and talk to the guy that built this 700r4 and see what he thinks, I know I need to get my decision made soon, cause my tranny is out! I will keep you guys posted with more details later!
Sam

As a person who also owns a GMC Typhoon (4.3 L turbo, AWD, LOTS of torque stock ~450ft lbs). In the typhoon world, we have mastered blowing up 700r4's, and making them last.
The biggest thing that will kill a 700, is heat. Any tranny can't handle heat, but 700 is worse. The newer 700's are better ) 88 and on. It is generally considered that corvette 700's are the best (syclone/typhoon is even better but rare) as they have bigger servo's and I think more clutchs. Without getting in too much detail, to make a 700 last when rebuilding add clutchs, add remote cooler and filter, and you should be fine. Mine in my typhoon is a stock rebuild, with 2800 stall 9" convertor, I have spent the last 40k miles trying to blow it up. Knock on wood, it is still holding in for me. I have a spare that is going in my 70. I think the bad name given to them, is because of other outside bad experiences or conditions, not necc. the bad design of tranny. ------------------ Jeff Scott '70 GMC Stepside, Short box '67 Camaro '63 Nova '92 GMC typhoon

Another killer of the 700's in hotrod's is an imprpoerly adjusted tv cable it causes the tranny to destruct pretty quickly. Not sure why I remember reading it in superchevy though.
