Re: How much to rebuild engine?
Depends on what your core needs done and what you consider "rebuilt" and if you're dropping off the motor or the truck.
A typical ring 'n bearing job on a small block can be done for $200 or less including oil and filter, but if you have anything more than poor (not terrible) compression you can't get away with just rings 'n bearings. If it rattles, blows smoke, or is just plain stuck you're looking at a couple thousand for mostly stock replacement parts. Several thousand if you start picking out upgrades. Expect to pay $500+ for labor to have someone else assemble it, and $500+ for labor to have someone else install it. Machine shop work can cost $500+ too.
The devil is in the details too, you wouldn't spend several thousand on a motor and not screw on a new water pump, there's $50. You'll probably rip a hose taking it out, there's $25. Oil, filter, coolant, $75. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor $100. That old starter might have spun the loose motor around fine, but the new motor is nice and tight. There's $100. See where this is going?
