I may have to take the cats off the Corvette and put "testing tubes" in after the headers to see what the difference in smell is. If it smells better without the cats, they may stay for a while.

I haven't had my truck that long but at times when a buddy is following me in their car they say my truck stinks! Not so much a gas smell though. They'd lean towards saying exhaust. There is no smoke at all. Doesn't seem like it's burning any oil. Is it just the way these old motors smell when they are burning gas?
