Re: Parting out - 1957 3600 3/4 ton truck
I am thinking this might be Chevrolet-specific information - I am pretty sure GMC did not call non-Deluxe cabs Deluxe....we are investigating this further. Always good to learn new / correct information so we share with others the right knowledge

Re: Parting out - 1957 3600 3/4 ton truck
I have to ask...is there any chance your inline 6 could be a 261 and not a 235. The 261's are getting hard to find.
Thanks, Jeff |

Re: Parting out - 1957 3600 3/4 ton truck
The inline 6 could be anything. If you can tell me where to find some identifying numbers I would be glad to identify it. It is a complete motor and trans. the trans is a 4 speed with a granny first gear. the e-brake is actually on the output shaft and has a circular brake pad around it that holds the shaft.
The extra body I have is a '55 and it is a custom small window. It has all the holes around the window and doors for the mouldings that were on it. The doors are now sold. but I still have a complete cab for $450.00. needs the outside rear corners and the lower door hinge sills. most everything else is pretty good condition. I'll even repair it (weld on new parts, no body work) if you pay the bill.

Re: Parting out - 1957 3600 3/4 ton truck
I guess I unknowingly set off a controversy about custom vs. deluxe cabs.
I'm happy that I learned something new and its great information to have. I have a small back window cab without custom trim and was considering replacing the cab with a large back window version (if I can find was reasonably priced). Sounds like both of yours are small back windows like mine though.

[QUOTE=ptc;7192068]The inline 6 could be anything. If you can tell me where to find some identifying numbers I would be glad to identify them.
The 7 digit casting numbers are on the distributor side and below the line of the distributor mounting hole. They may be in-front-of, or to the rear of the fuel pump, depending on the year and c.i. The 261 will also carry with it captain's bars ( l l ) which will be cast back by the starter, usually between and above the CON number and the date code ( a letter followed by three or four numbers ). If you could just reply with the 7 digit casting number I can decode year and c.i. Thanks, Jeff |

The whole thing is up for sale as a 235 with trans now for $300!!! is that deal or what? I just heard of a local SF woman who junked an old MAC computor her husband had at the house when he passed away, the e-junk company found out it was worth $200K and is trying to find her to split the money with her.... If its a 261 I'll split the extra value proceeds with ya!

Re: Parting out - 1957 3600 3/4 ton truck
Your 235 deal is great but I'm set on a 261. I've got the correct 261 head and am trying to rebuild my '52 Chevy pickup into a strong everyday driver, just can't find the block. Plus, you're just a few miles away. Well, here's hoping!

do you still have the interior handles. If they are not pitted i'd be interested in all 4.

The next biggest error is Cab identification. Most think that a De Luxe Cab was the better cab with a big window and a chromed heater panel in the dash. Again not so. De Luxe was the base model cab that could be optioned with a big window and a deluxe heater. A Custom cab was the high end cab that would have been optioned with a chrome trim package and better interior with or without a big window or heater. The spare cab I have available is a 1955 CUSTOM CAB and has holes for all the trim!!! it is totally bare $450.00- it had the stainless steel trim all around it. It is a small back window. it has minimal rust in the typical areas. It has been blasted and thats why it has surface rust on the outside. A spray of Rust Remover and this will be clean steel again..... Needs rear corners replaced, lower door jambs. couple small floor patches. Can do all repairs if wanted, I can do a big back window conversion too if needed @ cost+ welding time.
