Great score. I know of a few short beds in the area (I'm only an hour north of Baton Rouge) but have not found a decent long bed yet. Looking for one to fix and give to my 73 yo father, as he had one while we were growing up, but had to sell as the family got too big and always said he wished he could have kept it

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

i drive around all day for work and im dumb enough to stroll up to peoples houses in the middle of nowhere. so i find quite a few of them. just wish i had more money to get my hands on them all and fix em up.

so i finished the drop and it looks wicked. didnt put on the sway bars yet. but got everything else done. fuel pump on, new fuel lines as well. she should be ready to run steady once i go get some gas. she came with all new brake parts also. that will be for another day though.

shes got some attitude for sure now!!

well she wouldnt stay running. opened up the gas tank and pulled the most trashed sender ive ever seen. nothing but complete goo goo inside of that tank. so, new tank, sender, and rubber on the way.

You mind my asking where you ordered your tank from? And would you mind posting how it fits when you get it installed? I'm on the fence about trying to clean mine or order repro (I actually did and it was on back order at Classic Parts so I cancelled it), I've heard the fittment is not the best.

That's a nice truck to start with. When I look at that motor you just might have a 327. Clean the pad next to the water pump and check the numbers. It has 327 valve covers and 4 barrel carb. Just saying you never know these days. Good luck with your new truck

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

i got my tank from a buddy of mine that had a spare. it is probably from classic parts as that is where he orders everything. it fit really good actually. my only advice is to make sure that you dont go full tight on the filler neck rubber until it is in place where you want it.

the guy i bought it from is the one that rebuilt the motor. so it is definately a 283. has the power pack heads and intake on it. along with that 4 barrel. speaking of 327s though. i am planning a 327 build now. same plan as the 283 but just bigger.

my old sending unit

tank was pretty full of goo. and needed cleaning underneath.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

after i changed tanks and sending units it cranked right up. came out this morning and turned the key. pow. started right up. so i took it for a little drive around the neighborhood. shifts nice, rides pretty good! unfortunately it smokes big time. im hoping it just needs a pcv valve. couple more pictures.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

well today was a large set back. tried to stick a timing light on the motor to get it dialed in real nice. first the starter needed some smacking around. then the brand new summit brand distributor i just bought decided to stop working. either way i had planned to pull my valve covers to inspect a tap i heard yesterday. and to figure out why it was so hard to dial in timing. usually you can just hear what it wants. anyway. found three dead cylinders. two with zero rocker arm movement and one with a bent locked pushrod. so... looks like its time for that nice pretty motor i have been wanting.
heres the one side

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

man its been a year! time flys. anybody know how to get the pictures back from earlier in the thread?

truck is close to being on the road. new motor in. new brake system, new radiator. basically new drivetrain. minus the rear axle. clutch is really the last thing i need to decide on before i put it all back together and drive it. which is where i need yalls help.

i have a 283ci, with power pack heads, roughly 9:1 compresion, pretty damn big cam (for a 283), cereamic headers, and that huge *****in intake. what clutch would yall run. im thinkin maybe the stock clutch could handle it but i really dont want to be taking the trans back out to swap in a better clutch.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

I would think that a good quality stock type 11" clutch would be just fine behind that 283. That 283 shouldn't have enough torque to cause an issue with that clutch. Of course that is relative to how much tire you have on the rear and how you drive it.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

i have a pretty large tire on the back. its a 295/60r15 if i remember right. somewhere around 31 inches tall. any typically i am a destroyer of things also. but i went ahead and ordered a ram clutch from summit. its supposed to be basically a stock clutch. its just going to be a street truck so hopefully it will survive.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

did a couple things today. buttoned up the brakes, swapped the fuel pump over from my old motor. drained the fuel tank since its been sitting for a year and installed the new gas tank neck. started on the alternator bracket too. right now im really waiting on parts to show up.

i still need to order pulleys. im having a hard time finding a set that is not uber expensive. i also need to order up a distributor that will clear everything.

Re: out with the old in with the..... older?

its so close now i can almost hear it roar! lol. last thing i have to do is install pulleys and alternator. add fluid and wire up my distributor/starter/coil. otherwise the brakes are all bled, linkages are all hooked up. suckers pretty much ready to go.
