Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
That looks like a nice truck to be starting with, take it slow and steady. Keep it 4wd. Get it on the road and enjoy it, then if you want to do a full restoration/modification/customization do it later. After you have drove it for a few years you will have a better idea just what you want and need and what you don't. To get mine on the road the first time took 4 months (I wish I started with something as nice as yours looks) I then I drove it for 5 years, and am just now finishing a 2 1/2 year build.

Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
That truck is too nice to change up much. If you want disc brakes and stuff, buy a two wheel drive and build it. The original 4x4s are hard to find. It would bring more like it is than if You start changing it up. Hate to see survivors changed up when there are plenty of ordinary ones that you can build to whatever. Nice truck by the way. If it sat in one place down here that long it would have a tree growing through it.

Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
GM started building their own 4WD's as of 1960 in the 1/2 & 3/4 tons. Larger than that could be a NAPCO conversion.
If your truck was a NAPCO conversion the serial number would start 4C154. I'm sure if you check the serial number it will start 4K154. First digit would indicate the Model Year. First letter the Vehicle Type. Next two digits Series Designation. Next digit would be the Model Type. Next letter would be the Assembly Plant The rest of the digits would be Production Sequence. All production sequence numbers start with 1. You might consider buying some literature on the truck while your out a sea. The books can answer a lot of questions and the illustrations to allow you to see what is what on the truck.

Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
Yours is not a Napco, GM built. There is a Napco thread in the 4x4 forum. ck out some of the 4x4 builds in the build section.

Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
As a starting point, I would remove everything from the truck that isn't bolted down and give it a good thorough cleaning. A pressure washer would work well. Just be careful to not get any water inside the engine. That way you can get a good look at the condition of everything. If that engine is actually a 327, you will want to preserve that as best you can. Even if you don't want it, someone else will. The 327's are getting difficult to find.

Re: 64 k10 to c10 conversion
always quick with the great advice!
Bill - that is a super-nice truck, glad you've decided to keep it as a K10. Can't wait to see how it comes along. Ever grab the numbers off the 327? I'm assuming it's a transplant also as I don't think they were available in trucks til mid-65, but I'm not 100% certain on that. Anyway - really cool find. |
