Re: Working....64 SS
I think it's done for now anyway!
I cleaned all the outside trim with 00 steel wool and fixed the horn which turned out to be the spring inside the column. It's the part in red in the picture. I used a pen spring for now until the new parts arrive. I got new wipers ordered also.

Re: Working....64 SS
Rear brakes over hauled this weekend along with a transmission fix after driving it over to a buddies house. I started out changing the brake shoes on the rear along with wheel cylinders on both sides. Had to chisel off 1 bolt on each side. Got passenger side done went to mount the wheel cylinder and they gave me 2 of the same side.
Anyway got all the brakes working again and drove it over to pick some tee shirts up at a friends house and the linkage came a part. Cotter key broke off and the linkage fell off. Had to jack it up and put it in gear by hand. Drove it home and fixed that today along with pressure washing the under side.

Re: Working....64 SS
I've had the car not quit a year now and it's getting better and better. I had the front end aligned and it drives wonderfully. Put new shocks all around it. I put some carpet jut in the trunk area and it helped a lot on road noise. Plan to buy enough to do the rest of the car this winter.
AC is running great. 85* here today and inside the car is 40*! We drove it to the mts a few weeks ago and it ran great. I took the transmission pan off and changed the fluid, filter and added a temp gauge. It never got over 160*. I also added some center cap emblems to the wheels. I picked up some parts for it also. Factory tilt wheel auto, cruise control, tissue holder and high beam deemer. These all came out of the same car with 44800 miles on it.

Here is a new one I'm working on for the 64.
Tilt wheel to be installed after modifiying it to work with console shifter. I put the NOS tissue holder in this weekend also.

Re: Working....64 SS
Took the Impala Friday morning and had it detailed for the cruise in that we did on Saturday. Drove it a bit over 150 miles with outside temps in the 90"s and the AC ran all day at 38* inside. I was very pleased, well until the electric fan went out any way. It did Ok afterwards but it would run hot at red lights but we made it home Ok. I spent the day installing the old fan I had in the truck before the LS swap. It's two speed windstar van fan and it moves some air. I ran it for 30 minutes sitting in the garage with the ac on and it never went above 180*.
After we did the cruise in and eat lunch I headed over to David Hess place and we swapped even for his tilt column for a console. So all I need now is to clean it up, paint and install it.

Re: Working....64 SS
I started on the trunk redo also this past week. I wire brushed it down twice and have put 2 coats of Dupli-color bed armor on it so far. A couple more coats and then splatter paint it back to the right color!
I also added a picture of the electric fan micro switch I installed on the fan.

Re: Working....64 SS
I got the tilt column cleaned up and sanded for the repaint also in between coats in the trunk!
GM did not make a tilt wheel for the console cars but this one is. It also will have the factory 5000RPM tach installed also. That's what the cutout is for on the column so it want hit the tach!

Re: Working....64 SS
Got the final coat of armor on the trunk and primed the steering column. I also found a double 40 amp fuse holder for the 2 speed fan I installed.

Getting closer. Got the column painted and it's ready to go in. I got the tach housing painted and it's ready to be installed as well. For a spray can paint job I think it turned out great.

Re: Working....64 SS
Nice car!!! Question. How does that double fan work? I was told it was one or the other but not both... I was thinking of putting a small fan on the front of my motor for when the electric fans are not running.

Motor fan will keep it plenty cool when running down the road and to some what when stopped. But if the car starts heating up low speed electric kicks on at 185. If I have the AC on the high speed kicks on as long as the compressor is running. That Tarus fan is rated at like 3000CFM on high. I also have the high side hooked to the micro switch that once up to highway speed it will cut the high speed fan off.

Re: Working....64 SS
I put a paddle on the arm to catch air out in the grille. It's wired into the fan wire so when going down the road air pushes the arm and the switch opens which in turn cuts the power to the high speed fan. I added a small LED light to the dash so when it's on I know the fan is running when it's off I know the fan is too!

Re: Working....64 SS
I started on the tilt column and dash swap today.
I got the dash out and the hole for the tach cut and fitted. I also swapped under dash wiring out for a NOS harness that had all the factory connections on it. The guy I bought it from hacked the old harness bad. I took the cluster completely a part and washed it and cleaned it up good.

Re: Working....64 SS
More progress. I got the final coat on the dash. Glad I went back and bought another can of paint. It took the whole thing.
Got the tach all wired up and ready for final install. The tach mounting holes where the hardest part about the whole deal.Chevy was nice enough to stamp the back side of the dash for people like me who didn't think before they took all the lights out of it. Thank goodness they stamped it for me!
